Chateaulin is one of many Ashland restaurants shut down during the off season to clean house, give employees some time off or remodel. Most plan to reopen by the end of the month or in early February. Denise Baratta | Ashland Daily Tidings Mary Pat Parker, director of public relations and marketing at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce said for a tourist-based community like Ashland, the slow season is a great time for businesses like restaurants to take time off. "It's a perfect chance to take some much-needed time off for vacation and repairs and for them to gear up for the upcoming season," she said. Chateaulin, the popular French restaurant at 50 East Main Street near OSF, known for its fine dining offerings since 1973, is closed until Jan. 22., with the restaurant's wine shop next door closed until the Jan. 19. Ashland Bakery & Cafe at 38 East Main Street, one of three Ashland eateries to be featured on an upcoming episode of the Food Network program "$40 a Day" is closed until Feb. 9. Greenleaf, a downtown staple since 1985, located at 49 North Main Street, is closed until mid- or late February as employees take vacation and new kitchen equipment is installed. Monet Restaurant on S. Second Street, known for its French food and garden, will be closed until Feb. 14. At 265 4th Street in the Railroad District, The Peerless Restaurant, which was featured in the October issue of Gourmet Magazine, will be closed until Feb. 3. Macaroni's at 58 East Main Street and its upstairs bar Martino's, was closed on Jan. 1 and reopened on Friday to give employees some time off and to do some needed cleaning, said owner Marty Morlan. "January is normally slow so it's the perfect time to clean up and renovate," he said. "When Shakespeare fires up we get busier and busier as the season progresses and its harder to find time for a thorough cleaning. It's a perfect time to get things in tip-top shape. ... A clean ship is a happy ship." One eatery that has no intention of closing or changing its hours during the winter months is Geppetto's at 345 East Main Street. Owner Ron Roth said since it opened nearly 28 years ago, Geppetto's has been open from 8 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. "Sometimes I wonder about being open during a stormy morning in January, but it's about being here for the community," he said. "People remember that. ... If you switch around your hours, you can confuse the public." Roth said business is steady in the winter with locals, especially in the late evening hours when very few eateries are open. Roth, a co-owner of the Plaza Cafe on 47 North Main Street, said since that restaurant is more catered to the tourist trade, its hours are slightly shorter during the winter. The Plaza Cafe also shuts down for several weeks during the off-season. But unlike other eateries, it's normally during November, so one of his fellow co-owners can enjoy the end of trout fishing season, Roth said.
