`Waiting for Godot' The Department of Theatre Arts at Southern Oregon University will present Samuel Beckett's tragicomedy, "Waiting for Godot," in the Center Square Theatre on the SOU campus in Ashland. Evening performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 18 with matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18, respectively. "Waiting for Godot" unfolds around two seemingly homeless and hapless men waiting for someone named Godot. Neither can really recall who Godot is, nor when, where, or why they are waiting for him. The two friends pass the time in a drama of their own consciousness, resulting in a comical wordplay of poetry and nonsense. Beckett's work captured the popular existentialism movement of post-World War II in France. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1906, Beckett lived most of his life in Paris where he died in 1989. "Waiting for Godot," Beckett's first professionally produced play, opened in Paris in 1953 at the Left Bank Theatre de Babylone. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. The SOU cast features Tyson Jennings and Matthew Brown as Vladimir and Estragon. Christine Klein and Christopher Johnson play the brutish Pozzo and his slave, Lucky. Chelsey Dipasquale-Hunton plays the messenger who arrives each evening with news of Godot's delay. Craig Hudson is set designer and Anna Williams is costume designer. Lighting is by Erik Holden and sound design is by Chris Sackett. Gwen Overland is director of the SOU production. "Waiting for Godot" is a Second Season production which provides students, faculty and guest artists a showcase of unusual or distinctive plays and projects. It also allows directors, actors, designers and technicians to creatively explore these works in a process-oriented, workshop atmosphere.
