Except this year it almost didn't happen. Three quarters of the month seemed more like winter in Redding, with temps in the mid-50s to mid-60s and even a couple of overnight lows of 55 degrees, more typical of June. I didn't record a freezing temperature during the month until the day after Christmas. December is usually my coldest month. Of course, Mother Nature still had a little sting in her tail and hit us with a modified Arctic front right at the end of the month. Fortunately, it was nowhere near as bad as the previous year's December cold snap. First, it only lasted for five days, as opposed to two weeks, and second, it was not nearly as cold. The previous year I recorded temps down to 8 degrees, whereas in 2014 my low was 21 degrees, despite the National Weather Service's hyperbolic forecast low (twice, actually) of 12 degrees. (For your information, I live in east Ashland — not south Ashland, as it's usually called) at an altitude of 2,080 feet. Nothing out of the ordinary. The year of 2014 was notable for 4 things: 1) We had somewhat above normal precipitation for a change; 2) No measurable snow at my location (continuing an unfortunate trend); 3) For the second year in a row we had a wet September that put out fires and ended the smoke; and 4) Despite letters to the editor from people who seem to get their science from Fox "News," it was the warmest year on record. The following are some statistics for the year in general at my location (yours may vary considerably):  • Highest temperature — 100 degrees (July 1); • Lowest temperature — 21 degrees (Dec. 30); • Number of days above 100 degrees — 1; •  Number of days above 90 degrees — 34; •  Number of days with high temperature below 32 degrees — 0; •  Coldest high temperature — 36 degrees (Dec. 31); •  Warmest month — July (average high, 90.2 degrees — warmest July on record); •  Coldest month — January (average high, 48.6 degrees); •  Wettest month — December (5.11 inches precipitation); •  Driest month — July (0.69 inches); •  Total precipitation: 27.03 inches (10-year average is 24.63 inches); •  Total snowfall — trace; •  Greatest 24-hour precipitation — 2.11 inches (Dec. 11); •  Windiest month — December (14 days more than than 25 mph); •  Highest wind gust — 66 mph (Dec. 11); •  Date of first freeze — Nov. 16; and •  Number of days with "moderate" or worse smoke — 26.
