It's very clear that this corporate administration is exploiting as much natural resources as it can before people realize what's happening and put a stop to this massacre of our planet. The Biscuit Salvage Logging plan is just one more tragedy I would like to see stopped before we lose more of our very last big trees. The solution to our timber needs is not to log the largest trees in the forest, but rather sustainably harvest medium sized trees. If we don't want to explain to our children why nothing but fire hazardous waste is left in our "protected" forests, then we all better start doing a little more. Tell the government we want our parks protected for real! Wes Stokes Arcata, Calif. Bates, Buckley a good combo We have a chance to make a real difference in the quality of life we enjoy in Oregon this fall by electing a Democratic majority to the state House and Senate. For too long Republicans and their out-of-state corporate sponsors have dominated the legislative agenda, leaving our schools overcrowded, roads rutted and unpatrolled, and human services system in disarray. The major growth industry in the state is prisons. By electing Democrats Alan Bates to the Senate and Peter Buckley to the House, Ashland voters can take a stand for the idea of government as a provider of essential services which have the power to enrich our common life and to make our children's world better, not worse, than the world we have enjoyed. Vote Bates and Buckley for a better Oregon. Jim S. Martin Ashland It's more than one decision There is not one decision that the Bush administration has made that has not brought long lasting and irreversible harm to this world, to the people (except for a few elite), and the multitude of life forms in it. I won't list them all, all one needs to do is open the paper or turn on the evening news to hear of the latest one. I call it a war on life. Anything that is truly life giving has been assaulted, under the heading of protecting us again terrorists. Talk is cheap folks. Look around at the condition of our world and pay attention to the contribution our administration has made to the increased terror, environmental destruction, war, unnecessary loss of precious lives, unemployment or employment at lower salaries, more poor, no health care, huge rise in medicare cost, and most of all not doing anything that was promised at the last election. The list of harm done is endless. All this is on the name of keeping us 'safe.' Increased hatred, violence, greed, and taking over the world is not the way to peace. We know what we have in the current administration, if you want the continuation of this rampant destruction of your life and those of your children and beyond, then you know who to cast your vote for. If you want to cast a vote in favor of trying something new that will begin to reverse this war on life then support Kerry and Edwards, take a chance and reach out for something in favor of supporting life. Anne Stine Ashland A big note of thanks A big "thank you" to the gentlemen who built and/or refurbished the picnic tables in Lithia Park on Saturday, Sept. 11. You made my day! Mabel Young Ashland Measure 37 a mess Recently I received a call from supporters of Measure 37 stating their measure is about government compensation for taking someone's property. Don't be fooled, this is a complete misrepresentation. What 37 is about is a few people and corporations that qualify want money from us because state law says they can't do anything they want with their land. The major problem is there is no provision in this measure for raising the money they insist we give them. Obviously taxes would have to be raised and, since corporations have lobbyists and individual taxpayers don't, guess who probably will get stuck with more taxes. Another option for paying special interests not to lower our standard of living is further cuts in budgets to schools, senior services, emergency services, neighborhood planning, and other services that protect quality of life. Measure 37 is a poorly written initiative that will hurt us all.
