My first — and most important — goal was to get off my prescribed medications for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Mission accomplished. Another goal was that I wanted to lose 100 pounds by Thanksgiving. Once again, it was mission I accomplished with even a few weeks to spare. By the time you read this column, I would have achieved another personal goal. This one was to walk in a 5K race. On Saturday, I put on my walking shoes and checked this goal off my list by participating in the United Way of St. Charles Parish’s 19th annual 5K/10K Bridge Run/Walk. Competing in this race was not my initial plan. I wanted to walk through the streets of New Orleans for the Crescent City Classic, but my work schedule and lack of adequate training time forced me to look for another race. After weighing my options, I decided it was best to walk across the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge from Destrehan to Luling, Louisiana. From that vantage point, I get a great look at the mighty Mississippi River, but I hope that I don’t get scared looking down. I will also get to spend some quality time with my parents, Larry and Mary, and brother, Rob, who are also participating in the race. With only a few weeks of training, I know that I am not for the 6.2-mile trek associated with a 10K. That is why I opted for the shorter distance of 3.1 miles for the 5K. There were several factors why I didn’t get the proper training necessary for the 10K. I was sidelined for nearly two months with a pinched nerve in my neck. The other was more obvious … laziness. But I decided to get my butt in gear and start preparing for Saturday’s race. My training consisted of going to the gym and working on the treadmill, elliptical machine and stationary bike. I also threw in a few reps of lifting weights for good measure. On days when I wasn’t at the gym, I still found ways to get exercise. I worked in the yard and spent some time walking my dogs, Annie and Whitney, in the neighborhood. I know it is not enough, but at least it’s a start. All of this work has not been easy, and I have the aches and pains to prove it … hence feeling the burn. Losing more than 100 pounds since having weight-loss surgery nearly a year ago is quite an accomplishment, but watching what I eat and limiting portions can only take you so far. It also takes a dedicated exercise regiment to fully utilize my new weight-loss tool. I have to admit that I have not been as faithful as I should have in regards to an exercise program, but I am hoping that preparing for Saturday’s race is the kick start I need to get back on track in that regard. When it came to exercising, I guess I was a little hard-headed in thinking that I would lose all the necessary weight by limiting my portions and eating healthier. Too bad there isn’t a surgery to cure someone from being hard-headed. Weight-loss update: Starting weight (April 1): 401.2 pounds Surgery weight (April 15): 383 pounds Current weight (as of March 24): 297.4 pounds for a total weight loss of 103.8 pounds.
