How about trying to set a record for the largest thumb-wrestling circle or the most lab coats worn at once? If any of those sound appealing, ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum has you covered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9. The Ashland science museum at 1500 E. Main St. will host a World Records Weekend, where attendees will pitch in trying to break as many off-the-wall records as they can — about one an hour. A complete schedule of all record attempts is available at www.scienceworksmuseum.org/records . Attempts will be submitted to the Record Setter website, www.recordsetter.com , for publication. "Most of them we made up on our own," said ScienceWorks program coordinator Dana Schloss. "You can make up whatever you want (with Record Setter)." Records up for smashing Saturday include most spoons balanced on a face (currently 36), the largest thumb-wrestling circle (a crowd of 176 people would set the new record), and most lab coats worn at once (the record holder apparently managed to throw on 17). Would-be record setters also can be part of the largest sticky note mural of space ever made, most people playing patty-cake on one foot and most googly plastic eyes attached to one person. "I put a silly spin on a lot of them," Schloss said. Larger, more challenging attempts at records will also be attempted. Museum officials will join other museums in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota, San Jose and San Francisco to attempt the longest long-distance chain reaction. The Rube Goldberg scheme will be set up using devices such as phones, three-dimensional printers and fax machines, and will utilize transmitted electronic signals and mechanical movement to try to transmit a chain reaction across the country. "It's a chain reaction that'll actually go 3,000 miles," Schloss said. The event also will offer a "World Record Help Center," where participants can pitch their own ideas for records to set. "If you have a record you want to try to attempt, we'll try to make that happen," Schloss said. Rogue Valley resident and two-time record holder Julian Cordle will be a special guest both days. At 3 p.m. Saturday, he will bring the race car he used while part of the crowd that broke the record for most participants in a car race last year. At 3 p.m. Sunday, he will discuss how his team prepared to set the record for longest Wiffle ball game, set in 2013. Tickets cost $8 for children age 2 to 12 and for seniors 65 and older.
