File photo | Ashland Daily Tidings Five SOU standouts received Cascade Conference and/or NAIA Region I honors after helping the team post a 39-19 record, win a third consecutive league championship and advance to the regional tournament championship game. Three seniors — shortstop Kara Ray, pitcher Miranda Gillaspie and first baseman Amy Williams — each repeated on the all-star lists, and juniors Tanisha Burch and Leann Foster were first-time honorees. Ray led the squad with a .372 batting average and finished with a conference-best .420 clip in 25 league games. The former Crater High standout set school single-season (32) and career (63) records for stolen bases and compiled an all-time Raider-best 71 hits in each of her two years in Ashland after transferring from Wichita State University. Gillaspie led the six-team league with a 23-7 record, and her 1.57 earned run average was second in the circuit (behind teammate Julianne Cree). She posted a 13-1 mark in the spacious University Field confines this season and yielded only four earned runs during a 12-game April stretch encompassing 63 innings of work. The Clackamas Community College transfer went 46-14 in two seasons as a Raider, including a 23-2 mark at home. Williams, a former Ashland High two-sport star, finished second on the squad with a .355 batting average, and a late-season 27-for-56 tear (.482) upped her average a whopping 114 percentage points. The full-time student and full-time mother had a team-best 12 doubles and 18 extra-base hits along with 27 RBIs. Foster, a center fielder who prepped at Crater High, batted a collegiate-best .307 with a squad-best 41 RBIs with five home runs and nine doubles. The clutch run-producer and nearly flawless fielder drove in at least one run in 18 of the last 24 games and committed only two errors in 57 contests. Burch, a designated player from Scappoose via Mt. Hood Community College, earned Cascade Conference all-star status and set a SOU season record with nine home runs, including seven during conference play. The .354 hitter overcame a sluggish start to the season and became the school’s first-ever NAIA Softball Player of the Week honoree. Junior second baseman Megan Rock earned honorable mention league all-star status for the second straight year. She was a .410 hitter in conference games (.302 overall)., the Canby High graduate tied an NAIA record with three triples in a game and broke the SOU season and career record in the category (8). Southern Oregon, which defeated two top-six teams this year, finished No. 24 in final NAIA rating and fell to perennial powerhouse Simon Fraser in the regional tournament championship game last Friday in Ashland.
