Relay raises more than $30,000 The 2003 Ashland Relay for Life raised more than $30,000 for the American Cancer Society in the overnight event held at Southern Oregon University's Raider Stadium this past weekend. Donations are still being collected and officials are estimating that the total will be close to $32,000, exceeding the society's goal of $29,500. Proceeds from the event will help fund cancer research, education, and support programs. Of the 25 teams, 10 teams raised more than $1,000. The Ashland Community Hospital team, Peggy's Pals, raised the most funds at $3,325, with the First Baptist Church in second place and the Edward Jones team in third place for total funds raised. Among the teams who participated in the Ashland Relay for Life were the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashland High School, Ashland Community Hospital, First Baptist Church, Market of Choice, Phoenix High School, Safeway, and nine teams from Southern Oregon University. Teams are made up of 10 or more people who walked the track in shifts for 20 hours. Sherri Schulke, a Portland State University graduate student and cancer survivor, attended the event and spoke about her research on how children with cancer cope. She received a grant from the society for $40,000 to conduct interviews with children 9 to 18 years of age who have cancer. SOU President Elisabeth Zinser and Jefferson Public Radio's Eric Allen also spoke about their personal battles with cancer during the opening ceremony.
