State Sen. Alan Bates, D-Medford, and Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, announced the new funding Friday. "We're bringing substantial resources to our community to put people to work on a much-needed renovation project," Bates said in a press release. "I want to thank my colleagues in the House and Senate for acknowledging the essential upgrades we needed at SOU... ." The Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on Capitol Construction approved bonding for the major renovation. On Friday, both houses of the Legislature signed off on the funding allocation. Renovations will address security issues and include seismic upgrades, structural repair and fire code compliance. "Senator Bates and I know how vital Southern Oregon University is to our region," Buckley said in the release. "We also had the support of student government leaders who came to the Capitol almost every day of this session to help secure funding. They were essential to our efforts." The funding for SOU was the largest capital project funded by the Legislature for the Oregon University System in 2014. The Legislature adjourned Friday afternoon.
