Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Helicopter training exercise ends in destruction By Robert Plain Ashland Daily Tidings A helicopter crash at Ashland Municipal Airport closed the city-owned airstrip for two hours on Thursday evening. Two men, Daniel Jordan and James Christopher, climbed out of the accident unharmed, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The Hughes 269 Alpha, a small two-person craft with a glass bubble front, was conducting training exercises close the ground when the helicopter flipped onto its right side. “They were practicing an emergency procedure called an auto rotation,” said Bob Skinner, the manager of the airport. They were coming in hot, touching the skids to the ground and taking off again,” Sgt. Pat Roland, of the Sheriff office, said, explaining the procedure. Dana Sallee, an engineer paramedic with Ashland Fire and Rescue, said the helicopter was damaged. “The tail was broken off and the rotors were pretty badly damaged,” he said. “The glass bubble on the right side was totally gone.” The helicopter is owned by Jordan Air, an aviation repair and restoration company from Central Point. A few planes had to be turned away while the accident was being cleared.
