Nationally recognized, SODA is a digital library of regional materials. Divided into the Bioregion Collection and the First Tribal Collection, these archives enable public access to the library’s rich reserves of government publications, older books, and articles online at soda.sou.edu. The project, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, materialized by extensive collaboration with local, state and federal agencies and Oregon tribes. The First Nations Tribal Collection seeks to create a database of texts on the history and culture of indigenous peoples. It includes treaties, native language dictionaries and Congressional hearings. The BioRegion collection includes species studies, recovery plans and water resource investigations. Student John Prunty raves about the online resource. He searches SODA to "accumulate government documentation of wildlife usage in the watershed," he says. A simple SODA search for "sugar pine" yields 493 results. Most reference Environmental Impact Statements, but one source dates back to 1895, Mount Shasta, A Typical Volcano. Select this result, and the exact page where author J.S. Diller writes, "among many a score of species the sugar pine is monarch, frequently attaining a diameter of 12 feet and a height over 200 feet," appears on the screen. The website also provides helpful information on how to explore the vast databases. Three search techniques - Boolean, pattern, and concept - aid users to narrow down results. More opportunities to access documents and maps related to the environmental, economic, social, and political history of southern Oregon await. A third compilation, The Southern Oregon History Collection is under construction. Among other documents, this collection will include monographs and unpublished oral histories selected and contributed by project partners - the Southern Oregon Historical Society, Jackson and Josephine County Libraries. Librarians anticipate completion of the meticulous scanning process, and the redesign of SODA web interface to include the history collection, this fall.
