The blaze sent one man to the hospital and destroyed the camper of the 1979 GMC Sierra truck the man had apparently been living in. Ashland firefighter Jennifer Hadden sprays foam on a camper fire Thursday in Ashland. Denise Baratta | Ashland Daily Tidings Garen Phillips, 48, was taken to Ashland Community Hospital with second-degree facial burns. As of press time, he remained at ACH in stable condition. Tim Aleardo, a construction foreman working in an office building next-door, saw smoke rising from the camper and ran over to check on Phillips. "I had to pull him out of the trailer," Aleardo said. "He didn't want to get out." Aleardo had noticed Phillips stumbling in and out of the camper over the past several days. "Based on the statements from the witness, I think it made a big difference because the occupant of the camper was real interested in trying to retrieve more personal belongings," said Marguerite Hickman, the fire prevention officer at the Ashland Fire Department. "I think this person made a big difference in how the outcome could have been." It took the Ashland Fire Department about a minute to control the blaze, which gutted the camper. The truck, which was registered to Stephen Brewington of Ashland, was parked in the Skidmore Street alley behind a private residence at 254 N. Main St. Firefighters pulled bedding materials, a stovepipe and a propane tank from the trailer after dousing the vehicle with foam. Hickman emphasized rareness of Aleardo's efforts. "In some respects it's unusual, only because you have to be in the right place at the right time," Hickman said. "There's not a lot of opportunities for people to do that." Hickman reminded the public that returning to a burning structure for personal belongings puts that person at risk, as well as good-intentioned passers-by and the firefighters who respond the to the blaze. "We want people to remember to be safe," Hickman said. "Make sure, if the building's on fire, if there's smoke in the building, to get out." The fire was likely caused by a candle or cigarette, although it will officially be recorded as unknown. No adjacent structures were harmed by the fire.
