The comeback victory advanced Ashland into tonight’s championship round, where it will face Medford American Blue at 6 p.m. Medford American Blue beat Medford American Red 10-7 in the other semifinal. Ashland, which has scored 40 runs in four tournament games, beat Medford American Blue 11-0 in pool play on Saturday. “Of course we’re a little more confident than we probably should be, but we have a good team and we know we’re good,” Ashland coach Steve Dodds said. “We expect to do well and we will. We’ll come out and play hard. We can hit. Nine guys in a row, anybody at any time can bounce one over the fence or on the fence and that’s unbelievable.” South Suburban scored five runs in the first two innings on two hits, three walks and four Ashland errors. “I was a little worried,” Dodds said. Ashland came all the way back with a five-hit, five-run second inning that included a homer by Brady Thomas, a triple by Jake Scarminach and a double by Billy Hansen. Ashland added one in the third to take its first lead, then broke the game open by scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth. Christian Morrison hit a two-run double, while Luke Baldrica, Brent Hegdahl and Scarminach each added singles. Thomas started on the mound for Ashland but didn’t make it out of the first inning before being pulled in favor of Max Anderson. Anderson got out of a jam in the first inning and finished with five strikeouts in four innings. Baldrica pitched the fifth and Scarminach pitched the sixth, each notching one strikeout. 9-10 all-stars At Talent, Ashland jumped on Klamath Basin early and never let up en route to a dominating 16-2 victory that earned Ashland the District 6 championship and a berth to the state tournament Tuesday. Ashland scored six runs on three hits and three walks in the top of the first, getting a run-scoring double by pitcher Jamie Flynn and a two-run single by shortstop James Skinner. Ashland added six more runs in the third on five hits, including two-run double by Ryan Bottimore. Klamath Basin got on the board by scoring two runs on four hits in the third, but Ashland added four more in the fourth and finished the game after four by the 10-run mercy rule. “To come in and just come together as a team is just fantastic,” said Ashland head coach Greg White. “Our defense and our pitching has just been unbelievable. Five games in all-stars and we allowed 15 runs — that’s amazing at this level.” Flynn held Klamath Basin to two runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked zero to pick up his second win of the tournament. Since an opening-day loss, Ashland outscored its final four District 6 opponents by a combined score of 41-9.
