In 2004, several hundred people from Ashland and surrounding areas attended the Bike Swap where Lexi Delgado of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission estimated that roughly 200 bikes were sold. Delgado said the Bike Swap is, “such a great event for people with children to be able to upgrade their bikes,” and a “great way to bargain and socialize with the community.” This will be the first year that Ashland Parks and Recreation will host the event, mainly because Ashland Parks and Recreation can provide a more stable home for the swap, and because they have more resources as far as advertising, networking, and facilities are concerned. In the past the swap has been the responsibility of various different volunteers and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission. Those selling bikes are to bring their used bicycles to The Grove between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. to have the value of their bicycle calculated before the swap begins at noon. Sellers receive between 90- and 95-percent of the value of their bicycle, the rest of the funds go directly to bike safety and education courses. Several sponsoring businesses have donated bicycles and helmets to the swap, which will be raffled off between noon and 4 p.m. There will also be bicyclists performing stunts.
