--> --> Raider hoopsters lose; grapplers to return home Ashland Daily Tidings PORTLAND - The Southern Oregon men's basketball team couldn't overcome its shooting woes in a 74-55 Cascade Collegiate Conference loss to Concordia, Tuesday at Cavalier Court. The Raiders (8-13, 4-7 CCC) hit just 38 percent (21-for-56) of their shots - 31 percent in the second half - while the Cavs (9-14, 4-7 CCC) shot 50 percent, including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. The Cavaliers and Raiders are now tied for seventh place in the 10-team conference with seven league games remaining. Concordia's Troy Slonecker led all scorers with 17 points. The Raiders got a team-high 12 points from Jeff Tacheny, while Moses Olson added 10. Oscar Rodriguez pulled down a team-high seven rebounds off the bench, helping the Raiders outrebound Concordia 38-26. Concordia led 38-25 at intermission behind 15-for-28 shooting, then outscored the Raiders 36-30 in the second half. The Raiders hit 1 of 13 treys for the game and garnered just four assists as a team, while the home team dished out 15. Southern Oregon returns home this week for games against Cascade on Friday and Warner Pacific on Saturday. SOU Wrestling The third-ranked Southern Oregon University wrestling team plunges into the 2001-02 season stretch drive with a pair of important dual meets against NCAA Division II squads this week. The defending NAIA champion Raiders (2-2), who need to win four of their final six duals to extend the school's NAIA-record consecutive winning season streak to 32, host longtime regional rival Central Washington (7-6) in a Northwest Wrestling Conference clash Thursday night before traveling to the Bay Area for a Saturday showdown at San Francisco State (1-7). Southern Oregon, idle on its home mat since a season-opening 41-4 drubbing of Menlo College on Nov. 16, has won five of its past six home duals dating back to November 2000. Meanwhile, CWU's visit to McNeal Pavilion is historically significant. The only time the Wildcats have topped Southern Oregon in 19 clashes - an 18-15 decision in the initial encounter in December 1973 - happens to be the last time the Raiders lost at home to an NAIA team. The majority of the Southern Oregon squad was idle last weekend, but some of the Raiders competed unattached in the 12-team Clackamas Community College Open in Oregon City on Saturday. The result was four weight class champions: Colin Murphy (141), John Sills (165), Mike Sills (197) and John Fisher (285). In addition, Fisher and Waylon Alsbury, who finished fourth at 149, became the 13th and 14th Raiders to qualify for this year's national meet. Southern Oregon's most recent official varsity action was Jan. 11-12 in Davis, Calif., where the squad went 0-2 in duals against NCAA Division I teams but registered five top-six performances at the 12-team Aggie Open: Balensifer (third), Whitehead (third), Devin Parks (fifth at 184), Huntley (fifth) and Marc Harris (sixth at 125).
