Everything seemed to be going right for head coach Ken Lathen and the Grizzlies in their home opener at Mountain Avenue Gym. The man defense was holding up, Summit was becoming frustrated and the Grizz girls not only led, but controlled the floor for most of the game. ASHLAND HIGH'S BAILEY HASTY outruns Summit's Sean Hansen for a loose ball en route to a score. The Grizzlies played good enough to win, but a 3-pointer by Hansen sent the game into overtime, where Summit won, 43-39. Andrew Mariman | Ashland Daily Tidings The first two quarters were low-scoring, with both teams playing tough defense. At the half, Summit led 18-16. Coming out of the break, Ashland junior forward Bailey Hasty recorded two steals, a basket and an assist in less than a minute and energized the Ashland offense. The defense became more alert and the game opened up for Ashland as the baskets started to fall. While the first half was dictated by defense, the second half would be controlled by the offense. Senior guard Alysse Carlson led the Grizz girls with 14 points. Junior guard Jamie Roupp also put up double digits in the points column with 10. After losing control of the game, the Summit Storm suddenly turned it on and closed the Grizzly lead to just three in the final minute of play. With time running out in regulation, Summit's Sean Hansen hit a desperation 3-pointer from the top of the arc, tying the game 37-37 and forcing overtime. In OT, the Grizzlies managed to score only two points and watched as the Storm sealed the deal on a controversial foul call. The following free throws, missed by Summit, led to an offensive rebound and resulted in a basket from the post that gave the visitors the final margin. Lathen blamed the team's free-throw percentage, foul troubles and rebounding for the loss. "It was a tough game," he said. "We shot poorly from the line and turned the ball over at crucial times." The Grizzly girls converted just 1 of 11 free throw attempts and amassed 18 fouls. "Mentally, we just weren't ready today," Lathen said. "The girls hung in there, we just had a lot of spots. These are good girls though. We are going to bounce back and we are going to narrow the spots. It's unfortunate, but its basketball." The Grizz girls will have plenty of time to clean up the spots between now and their Southern Oregon Conference-opener against North Medford. Between now and that Jan. 4 game, the Grizzlies will play against Redmond, Yreka and compete in a tournament in Lake Oswego. "We have to be ready for this conference," said Lathen. "Luckily, we have the time to get there." SUMMIT (43) - Parks 9, Hansen 5, Horton 8, Gilbride 2, Johnson 2, Hackbarth 11, Black 6, Boise 0, Wilson 0. Totals: 14 12-19 43.
