We had a need at Ashland High School for mental health counseling, and skilled counselors from the community stepped up to fill that need. In this school year alone, we have had 557 counselor-student visits scheduled, usually 45-60 minutes each. This was a need that could not have been met by the AHS faculty and staff, so without these volunteers, these students would not have received help. While the program was initially designed to provide alcohol and drug counseling to students with that need, there were many other issues that came up. Issues for which students have received counseling include eating disorders, suicide thoughts, homelessness, depression, gender identity, family illness, anger management, sexual assault, relationship issues, grief and loss, drug and alcohol abuse, physical or sexual abuse, basic coping skills - the list could go on and on. The following mental health professionals volunteered for the ASAP program over the past two years: Kate Balcon, Scott Bandoroff, Ann Barton, Ann Bodin, Kaaren Borsting, Ellen Clephane, Paul Dennis, Martha Feil, Kathleen Finnegan, Johanna Fisher, Steven Fogelman, Stephen Granach, Kim Grynick, Sheri Harding, Jan Jacobs, Kent Provost, Cathleen Katz, Bill Kirkman, Caroline Kirkman, Philip Lang, Brian Lewis, Diane Mason, Bill McMillan, Steven Meeks, Keith Moseley, Corinna Scheibler, Lee Schnitzer, Dale Schumacher, Eldon Seebart, Charles Skupeen, Joan Spear, Tanya Tchestnykh, Juanita Walker, Julie Weber. The community committee guiding the ASAP program includes Siri David Alrich, Paul Copeland, Graham Lewis, Heidi Parker, AHS counselor Steve Smith, and Assistant Principal Don Valentini. Keith Moseley and Al Bodin assisted in the formation of ASAP last year. Volunteer coordinator Sue Graham provided critical organizational structure to keep the ASAP program running smoothly. I am grateful to live in a community that includes such wonderful people. Please help me thank these community members for their willingness to give their time for the benefit of our kids.
