An arraignment date for Jonathan Guevarra, 19, has not yet been set, said Allan Smith, a Jackson County deputy district attorney who is handling the case. Guevarra suffered a broken ankle in the crash on North Main Street in Ashland and remains hospitalized at Rogue Valley Medical Center. He was listed in fair condition Thursday, a nursing supervisor said. “At this point, (police) certainly could arrest him,” Smith said. Ashland police Sgt. Corey Falls said no officers were guarding Guevarra at the hospital late Thursday. After hearing about an hour’s worth of testimony from six witnesses, the grand jury returned an indictment charging Guevarra with first-degree manslaughter, a felony Measure 11 crime that carries a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 years under state sentencing guidelines. Guevarra also was indicted on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. Court records show Guevarra pleaded guilty to a DUII charge last October in Jackson County Circuit Court and took part in a one-year diversion program as punishment. His driver’s license was suspended for about two months following the conviction, state Driver and Motor Vehicle Services officials previously told the Mail Tribune. Just after 10 p.m. on June 3, an Ashland police officer saw Guevarra’s Chevy Blazer racing a Honda del Sol along North Main Street. The officer tried to stop both vehicles, but only the Honda pulled to the side of the road. The Blazer swerved through traffic until it collided head-on with Castillo’s Nissan Sentra, police said. Castillo, 18, of Talent, died at the scene of the crash. She had graduated from Ashland High School earlier that evening and was headed to an all-night graduation party when the wreck occurred.
