My perspective has always been about teamwork, helping others, learning, building America, as in phenomenal caregiving, teachers and nurses, to name a few. Not sports, as brutal as some may be, TV and movies — potentially very violent. Do so many people truly utterly care about whether an actor or actress wears a shirt which is not trendy? How does this make it to top media? And what is with the media, especially newspapers? Nearly everything, except for advertisements, pertains to violence!  So, I am gathering, the true American values are predominantly based on violence. How do the baseball left fielder and the movie performer make literally millions of dollars per either season or one movie, when caregivers,teachers and nurses will never ever see millions, let alone one? This fine great country of ours — what were their values, again? Guess history does not change, very much.  Thank you for your attention to a very important subject.  Jeff Kassman Ashland Thanks to Homebuilders On behalf of the foster and adoptive children of Jackson County, I would like to thank one of our community partners who has helped to make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children in Southern Oregon. On July 18, the Jackson County Homebuilders Association hosted a picnic for over 150 people. Foster and adopted children and families enjoyed a barbecue, water spray park, prizes from “fishing,”  face painting and the tremendous hospitality and generosity of these men and women. Thank you so much to these fine people who are making a difference in the lives of children. If you would like to find out more about foster parenting and/or adoption or want to make a difference in the life of a child in other ways, you can get more information by contacting Child Welfare Programs, 776-6120, extension 264. Penny Esser  Medford Check out Paisley Summer is gradually winding down. I did however drive to Paisley (Lake County) to attend their annual Mosquito Festival on Saturday, July 25. Driving east I took the Bly Cutoff, which straddles the Klamath/Lake County line inside the Gearhart Mountain Wilderness Area of the Winema-Fremont National Forest. The other alternative would be driving Highway 140 east of Bly (Klamath County) to Lakeview (Lake County). By driving the former route I was thus able to reduce road mileage from 30 to 40 miles. Previously I mentioned this isolated, remote, out-of-the-way pocket in "Wilderness Area near Paisley worth a visit," in the July 8 Ashland Daily Tidings. On this scenic route I saw mule deer, pronghorn antelope and of course livestock (grazing cattle), as this is open range. Much natural beauty indeed! To learn more about Paisley's annual Mosquito Festival, see the July 19 Klamath Falls Herald and News article titled "2015 Paisley Pioneer: Bod Daley Pioneer for Mosquito Festival Parade" at www.heraldandnews.com. While in Paisley I briefly stepped inside the historic (1883) Paisley Pioneer Saloon situated along Highway 31, the main drag through town. Inside posted on the wall some were "off the wall" comments and sayings. Consider this quote: "If you can't say anything nice about someone, go ahead and lie." Never here in Ashland would something resembling that be posted. But remember, this is reflective of Oregon's designated outback high desert sagebrush savvy and culture. Marster Springs Campground six miles outside Paisley along the Chewaucan River is a great and inexpensive place to camp. Under "Oregon's 10 best campgrounds for tenters," this site in mentioned. Finally, the Lake County Examiner in Lakeview (www.lakecountyexam.com) will have a write up on the Paisley Mosquito Festival. This weekly rural Southern Oregon/Eastern Oregon newspaper was originally chartered in 1880. That is 135 years of journalistic coverage for this region within driving distance of Ashland and the Rogue Valley. James A. Farmer Ashland Gross mental goosebumps I emailed my two grown daughters, who were born and raised in Ashland, articles and opinions about the proposed synthetic grass. I also included a picture of the "grass" installed by Omar's restaurant. One of my comments (among others, as I am not a fan of the idea) with the photo was it's too perfect looking and doesn't look real. One daughter’s response was, "That's the problem with fake things, they look too perfect. The definition of perfection is unattainable, and when you see it in everyday life it gives you mental goosebumps.” My other daughter simply said "gross." Every day as I drive by the already installed “grass”, I now have "gross mental goosebumps" at the thought of our beautiful boulevard median being replaced with the synthetic product.
