--> --> Ashland boys snap skid; SOU men upset No. 8 Albertson By Sarah Petersen Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland boys basketball snapped a 16-game losing streak - spread over two seasons - with a 48-44 non-conference victory over Lebanon Saturday night at the North Mountain gym. "It's fun to have kids that have determination," Grizz head coach John Skinner said. "When the kids listen, they can win. I felt like at the end of the game the pressure was on Lebanon and not us for a change. I think we are just about to the top of the hill. We found out tonight what it takes to win." The Grizzlies (1-1) got off to a slow start as the visiting Warriors scored back-to-back lay-ups by Zack Hagemeister for a quick 4-0 lead. Senior guard Bryan Clevenger got the Grizzlies on the board by nailing a three from the top of the key, but that would be Ashland's only points of the quarter as they trailed 8-3 after one. The Grizzlies battled back in the second quarter and took the lead at 16-14 on a jumper from senior guard Titus Weston. With seconds ticking down in the first half, senior point guard Lance Streng hit a jumper to give the Grizzlies a 20-18 halftime lead. During the third quarter the Grizzlies again got off to a slow start allowing the Warriors to score two uncontested lay-ups. But Streng got the Grizz going again with a length-of-the-floor assist to Christopher Presicci and the hosts had a 27-26 lead, that fattened to 38-33 after three periods. The Warriors and the Grizzlies traded baskets much of the fourth quarter until a 3-point play by Rowe put the Grizz up for good at 47-44 with a minute remaining. A Weston free toss in the waning seconds provided the 48-44 final. "Now we can say we have won," Weston said. "Definitely we accomplished getting over the hump. The last two minutes were like practice. We just went out and did like we were supposed to." Streng and Rowe each paced the Grizzlies with 11 points. The Grizzlies will play at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at Redmond. Ashland Girls Basketball At Corvallis, the Grizz girls started off the year with a pair of defeats at the annual Crescent Valley Tournament. Ashland started off the tourney with a 57-41 setback to Corvallis Friday night and then fell to the hosts 51-38 Saturday night. Grizz junior post Marla Morin led the squad in scoring, netting 13 points in each contest. Sophomore guard Kate Morris added 11 points against Corvallis, while freshman guard Alysse Carlson had 11 points against Crescent Valley. The Grizzlies travel to North Valley Tuesday night and then return home Friday night when they face Marshfield at 7 p.m. SOU Men's Basketball At Atherton, Calif., the Raiders turned in an impressive defensive effort and some timely 3-point shooting to upset eighth-ranked Albertson 71-59 Saturday night in the third-place matchup of the Bud Presley Classic at Menlo College. In the first half the Raiders went 4-for-8 from 3-point range to offset a 51 percent shooting effort by the Coyotes and took a 33-30 halftime lead. The Raiders opened the second half by holding Albertson to a 10-for-28 effort from the floor and only 1-for-11 from 3-point range. "In the second half we just totally shut them down from outside and we didn't give up any freebies," SOU head coach Brian McDermott said. "And that's what you have to do against them because they've got so many shooters. They start hitting 3-pointers and it opens everything up." Hamilton Barnes led the Raiders with 15 points, including five 3-pointers. Junior Martin DeGroot added 11 points, while senior Matt Zosel had 10. SOU Women's Basketball At Oakland, Calif., the Raiders improved to 3-3 on the year with an 87-60 victory over Pacific Union in the consolation game of the Holy Names Tournament Saturday night.
