Wednesday and Thursday evening two prospective coaches met with the interview board and SOU coaches over dinner. The two candidates, Lynn Kennedy of New Mexico Highlands University and Vicki Lynn Vaughan of The Colorado Springs School, were selected from a large pool of applicants and a final decision is expected to be made in the next week. “The dinners all went well,” said SOU athletic director Dennis Francois. “We have two fine candidates and I am happy with the search process.” The position calls for applicants to have a master’s degree in physical education or a related field and at least three years of professional experience coaching women’s basketball at the collegiate level. Both candidates have strong resumes that boast years of experience coaching, teaching and playing basketball. Kennedy has ten years experience as a basketball coach, including four years as a head coach at the collegiate NCAA Division II and NCIA Division II levels, three years as a NCAA Division I top assistant, two years as a NAIA assistant and high school coaching experience. He also has a Master of Arts Degree in Physical Education and is working toward a Master of Business Administration. He also has five years experience as a college level physical education instructor. Vaughan has two years experience as assistant women’s basketball coach at the United States Air Force Academy, seven years as the head women’s coach at Lincoln College, and coached in a professional European league for one year with a 27-1 record. She has more than 25 years experience coordinating and instructing at summer basketball camps and played four seasons at the collegiate level. She was an English instructor for seven years at Lincoln College. The candidates were picked based on several factors, including the potential to have an academic teaching position, coaching history, the ability to recruit student athletes, strong organizational skills and strong communication skills. The position includes the opportunity for a possible limited part time teaching position with the department of health and physical education, so the candidates’ educational background plays a significant role in the decision making process as well as coaching history and records. Both candidates were interviewed by several staff and faculty members of SOU as well as members of the women’s basketball team, allowing the athletes a chance to meet their potential coaches and voice their opinions before a final decision was made. “Right now we are tabulating all of the different feedback,” Francois said. “The players had interaction with the candidates and got to talk with them.” Amanda Bolsinger is a correspondent for the Ashland Daily Tidings.
