The visiting Millers dominated the boards and held the Grizzlies to two points in the third quarter en route to a 48-30 Midwestern League victory Friday at Mountain Avenue Gym. Springfield (8-5, 3-0 MWL), which has won four straight and six of seven since starting the season 2-4, outrebounded Ashland 40-22 and was led by Talon Harrington’s 17 points. Walker Shibley-Styer scored nine points and Collin Malcolm seven for the Grizzlies (7-6, 1-3), who were held to their lowest point total of the season and hit just 5 of 14 free throws. “It was a complete letdown,” Ashland coach Keithan Gregg said. “They were flat all game long and we just couldn’t get out of that flunk. It was a little bit of a big-game hangover that we could not bounce back from.” The Grizzlies went on a 10-0 run at the end of the second quarter to climb to within three points of Springfield, but the Millers reclaimed control in the third before pulling away. “The intensity wasn’t’ there from start to finish and that’s going to happen at times when you’re dealing with 15- and 16-year-olds,” Gregg said. “You’re going to have your ups and your downs.” Ashland is off until next Friday’s game at North Eugene. SPRINGFIELD (48) – Harrington 17, AhSam 14, Bourassa 9, Cook 4, Black 2, Sorber 2, Thomas 0. Totals: 18 8-13 48. Springfield 8 11 12 17 – 48 Ashland 6 10 2 12 – 30 3-point goals – Springfield 4 (Ahsam 4), Ashland 5 (Shibley-Styer 3, Kennedy 1, Hasskamp 1). JV result – Ashland won. Girls Basketball At Eugene, McKenna Read and Georgia Williams scored 13 points apiece to lead Ashland, but the Grizzlies fell to Springfield 56-34 on Friday at Springfield High School. The loss dropped Ashland to 7-7, 0-4 in the Midwestern League. Springfield improved to 8-6 and 3-0. College Wrestling Second-ranked Southern Oregon clinched its 45th consecutive winning season with blowout wins over Pacific University and Warner Pacific on Thursday in Forest Grove and Portland. The Raiders trounced Pacific 50-3 and Warner Pacific 42-3 to improve to 10-2 in dual meets. Against Pacific, Devin Poppen (133 pounds), Tyler Cowger (149), Jacob Abrams (184), Taylor Johnson (197) and Clayton Burtis (heavyweight) each recorded pins.
