Portions of the grassy seven-acre site currently are used for a community garden and horse boarding. The public is invited to give input during a meeting that begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Upper Room Coffeehouse & Bookstore, located near the park site on the second floor of Ashland Christian Fellowship, 50 E. Hersey St. Whether or not they attend the meeting, residents can fill out a survey asking them to rate the importance of a wide variety of possible park features, such as a restored riparian area and trail along the park’s border with Ashland Creek, assorted garden areas, a basketball court, a playground, parking and/or public art. About the only possibility not on the table is creation of a soccer or baseball field, due to the relatively narrow shape of the site, according to Parks Director Don Robertson. “One of the goals of the parks commission is to have a neighborhood park within one-quarter mile of every household,” he said. “Because it’s a little larger than the average neighborhood park, there’s an opportunity for more amenities.” The Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission approved use of a portion of the undeveloped land for a community garden on a temporary basis in the spring of 2003 after local gardeners proposed the idea. The garden has proven so popular there is a waiting list for people who want a plot to use, according to community garden co-founder and master gardener Carol Kale. No decision has been made about the future of the garden, Robertson said. “Of course I would like to see the garden remain,” Kale said. “I would perhaps even like to see it expand. It gives everyone a sense of community.” A timeline and costs for the development of the park have not yet been established. David Lewis Associates, a landscape architecture firm based in Portland, is designing the park master plan using community input. Additional meetings will be announced, Robertson said.
