Peterson The Associated Press METZGER — Hope Glenn had called 911 asking for help for her drunken son, who was holding a knife to his throat and threatening suicide. Minutes after officers arrived, Lukus Glenn was dead. Hope Glenn wonders why her only son had to die on her doorstep. The Glenn family, through its attorney, is calling for a public inquiry into the shooting, questioning whether Washington County could conduct a full and fair investigation. The shooting early on Sept. 16 has rocked the community near Portland. Lukus was a former placekicker for the Tigard High School football team, and his mother was a respected soccer coach. Some question the use of deadly force with such haste. Lukus was shot four minutes after officers arrived. Officers, who fired beanbag rounds at Lukus with no response, said they feared for the Glenn family's safety after the teenager bolted for the front door, according to a release by the sheriff's department shortly after the shooting. An autopsy showed Lukus had a blood-alcohol level of 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit for driving. He was struck by eight bullets. The case was expected to be turned over to the Washington County district attorney's office, which could announce as early as next week whether a grand jury will look into the matter. Beaverton attorney Lawrence Peterson, in a letter to Washington County Commissioner Tom Brian and Tigard Mayor Craig Dirkson, said the family was calling for a public commission to look into the shooting. The letter didn't describe how the commission would be set up, or its powers. "The Glenn family has lost confidence in Washington County's ability to perform the full and fair investigation that has been promised to the public," Peterson said. "Unfortunately, Washington County and Tigard officials have made numerous misleading statements to the media and have engaged in actions which can only be viewed as damage control or spin." In a letter sent to journalists, the commissioners asked for the community's patience during the investigation by the district attorney's office and the county major crimes team. "Like everyone else concerned about the loss of a life and the impact of such an incident on the family of the young man, as well as the deputies and their families, we must await the results of the district attorney's review," the commission's letter said. "The district attorney's function is limited to determining whether any criminal charges are warranted as a result of anyone's conduct in connection with this incident and whether to present the case to a grand jury." Rob Bletko said that there were many inaccuracies in Peterson's letter and that he had not yet seen the case documents. "I could have a decision early next week, if all the questions that I have are answered by the material I receive," he said. More than 600 people attended a memorial service for Lukus last weekend at Tigard High School. Soccer players at Wilson High School, where Hope Glenn has coached, were selling T-shirts bearing the word HOPE — Help Officers Peacefully Enforce — in honor of the Glenn family. Proceeds will go to police agencies for enhanced training in crisis intervention. Current Comments: My heart goes out to the grieving family.God Bless them. I can't help but think about an incident in Ashland with a local boy who had a knife not to long ago.It made quite a bit of news here.I remember Chief Mike Bianca wrestled with the man and tried to disarm him without shooting him. Some of his officers later made comments regarding they had wanted to shoot the boy but didn't have a clear shot.It was fortunate the incident here ended without bloodshed.I read this and appreciate Chief Bianca Steve L.
