LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Aug. 17 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Aug. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 17, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Ship by rail Tidings "Our View" Thursday, "Just some oily dirt," seems to miss the point. What we residents of the Oak Street neighborhood are asking the council is: "Since the Union Pacific owns the right of way, and created the problem with rail in the right of way, and since UP is in the business of heavy hauling, shouldn't UP be required to fix the problem within its right of way, not by running large numbers of huge heavy trucks over our city streets?" John Fisher-Smith Ashland Concerned about bricks Tom Dimitre’s guest opinion: “OSF remodel will do little for those with disabilities” was a concern to me, an older adult with some difficulty walking. I was very much looking forward to the changes to the bricks which I assumed would make navigating that area easier for those of us with walking problems. It would be great to have a response from OSF, which I hope would be reassuring. Nita Rosene Ashland Be the solution As we have since 2009, on Saturday, Aug. 8, neighbors helped neighbors provide food for those in need. Throughout Ashland, neighbors traveled the streets collecting green bags filled with food stuff and needed items to stock the shelves of the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. The Ashland Food Project, a model of how we can address one of the most pressing issues in our — and other — communities, collected over 23,000 pounds of food and needed nonperishable items. Every other month, we ask our donors to add an extra can of food or other item to their shopping list when they visit one of the markets in Ashland. On the second Saturday of even-numbered months, volunteers collect the green bags and deliver them to the Food Bank, where more volunteers sort and stock the shelves. If you want to see smiles that go for miles, if you want to feel the energy of people giving of their time, and the joy of knowing they are helping those in need, I encourage you to come to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank on Saturday, Oct. 10. Better yet, I encourage you to become part of the solution. Become a donor for the Ashland Food Project, volunteer at the Ashland Emergency Food Bank, and know the joy of making Ashland a community that cares supports everyone. Gregg Gassman AFP Steering Committee Recognize Arsenault Proud mention was made Wednesday, Aug. 12, “Award goes to Senior Center helpers” receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award. I, too, applaud these people for their services through the Food and Friends Program. However, recognition needs to be given to Neal Arsenault, a 16-year on-the-job paid employee and the guiding force to implement this program. He rolled his sleeves up and worked onsite in the preparation and serving of daily lunches; in addition, he organized and directed the deliveries of food within the community. It was his can-do commitment, his clear thinking and extraordinary pleasant attitude that helped this program operate to its fullest. Posthumously, the Ashland community should recognize his enormous contribution. He is missed.
