ASHLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT Ashland: Police department hires from within to fill slot left vacant by soon-to-be new county sheriff Falls Comment By Thomas Moriarty Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Thomas Moriarty Daily Tidings Posted Dec. 4, 2014 at 5:50 PM Updated Dec 5, 2014 at 11:37 AM By Thomas Moriarty Daily Tidings Posted Dec. 4, 2014 at 5:50 PM Updated Dec 5, 2014 at 11:37 AM » RELATED CONTENT • City's policy, efforts aim for diversity, but numbers show shortfall... • Falls handily beats Winters • Sheriff Winters announces his retirement • Falls leads with 46.7 percent of vote so far in sheriff's race... » Social News With one of its two deputy chiefs headed off to take the reins of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the Ashland Police Department has already chosen his successor. Chief Terry Holderness said Wednesday that Detective Sgt. Warren Hensman will fill the spot soon to be vacated by current Deputy Chief Corey Falls, who handily beat Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters in the November election. Falls ended up with 77 percent of the votes cast; Winters with 23 percent. Hensman spent almost a decade with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department before joining APD, and another two years before that with a department in Georgia. Chief Holderness said Hensman joined the Ashland department with the highest recommendation from his former employer. "(Las Vegas Metro) sent a letter over here when we hired him saying he was going to be promoted to sergeant if we hadn't hired him," he said. As detective sergeant, Hensman currently supervises three detectives and an investigative specialist on a daily basis. The department has two other detectives, but one is assigned to the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement team, and another works primarily on the department's You Have Options program for sexual assault cases. In his new role, Hensman will be primarily supervising the department's patrol division, broken down into teams composed of a sergeant and three officers. Hensman, who's married with two sons, said he was drawn to the profession by a simple desire to better his community.  "I love helping people — and I say that with a passion and a truth," he said. Among the programs Hensman's started at APD is Shop with a Cop, which pairs kids in need with police officers who take them shopping at Christmas time. Hensman said he'd seen the program in Las Vegas and had always wanted to participate. "In Las Vegas, we had this motto 'I CARE,'" Hensman said. "That stands for integrity, courage, accountability, respect for people and excellence. That's what I try to live by every day."
