Sturgell, Cole advance at Keen Invite SOU women hoopsters fall at Oakland; Phoenix grapplers shine PRIMM, Nev. - A pair of Southern Oregon University wrestlers stayed alive in the consolation bracket Friday at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational. Seniors Devin Cole (295 pounds) and Dan Sturgell (184) each suffered a lone defeat during the first day of action. Cole rolled to the quarterfinals before falling to Oregon State's Jason Cooley 11-3. On his way to the quarters, Cole pinned Mike Roberts of Colorado Mines, then knocked off No. 11 seed Bart Johnson of Boise State and sixth-seeded John Test of Clarion (Pa.). Sturgell, the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 184 in the NAIA, won his four matches by beating Brad Dubrovich of Colorado Mines, Rudy Ruiz of Kansas, Phil Freeman of Ohio State and Jeremy Wilson of Portland State. The field of the invite contains 51 schools and some of the top NCAA Division squads in the country. After the first day, SOU is currently in 28th place. SOU's Zachary Mock (174) posted two wins at the tourney, while Jeremy Wynia (141), Colin Murphy (149), John Sills (165) and Devin Parks all posted single wins. After finishing up the tourney today, the Raiders are off until Dec. 15 when they travel to face Cal State Fullerton. SOU women's basketball At Oakland, the road and shooting woes for the Raiders continued as SOU fell to host Holy Names 80-58 in a matchup of West Coast NAIA powers. The 16th-ranked Hawks (2-5) made up for a defeat at the hands of the 26th-ranked Raiders (2-7) last Saturday in Ashland. Holy Names rolled out to a 14-point halftime lead and then held the Raiders to a 9-of-26 shooting performance in the second half to cruise to victory. The Hawks outrebounded the Raiders 43-26 and were led in scoring by Nicole Bailey's 17 points. Junior forward Melissa Core was the lone Raider in double figures with 12 points. The starting guard tandem of seniors Alison Richards and Tiwana Merritt combined to go 4 for 20 from the field. Merritt finished the game with seven points, while Richards netted six for the Raiders. On the season, the Raiders are 2-0 at McNeal Pavilion, but 0-7 on the road. They'll try to snap that streak tonight when they travel to Angwin, Calif. to face Pacific Union. Prep Wrestling At Phoenix, Class 3A No. 1-ranked Phoenix won four individual championships and finished second as a team at the Phoenix Invitational Friday. Class 4A No. 2-ranked Crook County won the tourney, while Ashland finished sixth. Brandon Sousa (145), Kyle Kauffman (152), Forest Jacobs (160) and Keanon Ferguson (215) all came away with titles for the host Pirates. Ashland's Elijah Blessing (152), Aaron Batchino (119) and Josh Smith (112) each finished third in their weight classes.
