COLLEGE WRESTLING Fourth-ranked Raiders, Gutches try to make noise at NAIA nationals No. 4 SOU seeks fifth national title in Kansas By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Mar. 6, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Mar. 6, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> The Southern Oregon wrestling team will be aiming for national championship No. 5 and its 174-pound juggernaut No. 4 when the Raiders take the mat at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kan., starting today. Southern Oregon senior Brock Gutches, already the first NAIA wrestler at 174 to claim three national titles, can make it a clean college sweep by capturing his fourth Saturday night at the NAIA national championship meet, while fourth-ranked SOU will be trying to supplant top-ranked Grand View of Iowa and bring home what would be the Raiders' fifth national title. The meet begins today at 7 a.m. (Pacific) and wraps up with semifinal and championship matches Saturday. Results will be posted at naia.org. The Raiders last won the team title in 2001 and will need everything to go right this weekend in order to add to its trophy case and upset Grand View. The Vikings have won three straight team titles, while SOU, Grand View’s greatest threat in the last half-decade, placed second in 2012 and 2013 and fourth last season. "It will take a full team effort," SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. "We may need 11 All-Americans to (win another championship). You need a great Friday night to have a great Saturday night." Southern Oregon returns five of the six All-Americans who led the charge last year in Topeka, including the dominant and top-ranked Gutches, the Central Point native who’s 13-0 with seven pins at nationals, 27-2 this season and hasn’t lost to an NAIA opponent since Dec. 13 of 2012. Gutches will begin his four-peat bid against No. 16 seed Ishmael Rempson of William Penn (Iowa) or No. 13 seed David Fenton of Missouri Valley. Also on Gutches' side of the bracket is second-ranked Thomas Moman (Grand View), who's 29-2. Gutches is one of 11 SOU wrestlers who qualified for nationals, while Grand View and third-ranked Great Falls (Mont.) each sent 12. Southern Oregon’s other returning All-Americans are third-ranked 157-pounder Dalton Urrutia, fourth-ranked 149-pounder Tyler Cowger, 10th-ranked 184-pounder Jacob Abrams, third-ranked 197-pounder Charles Johnson and ninth-ranked 285-pounder Clayton Burtis. The Raiders also will bring senior Ryan McWatters, who’s ranked fourth at 184, and freshman Devin Poppen (ninth at 133). Urrutia will face unranked Jonathan Blackwell of Bethany (Kan.) in the first round of a weight class that’s stuffed with seven returning All-Americans. The winner of that match will take on 16th-ranked Joseph Weber of Briar Cliff (Iowa) in the round of 16. Cowger has a first-round bye and will square off against 15th-ranked Victor Thomas of Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the round of 16. The winner of that match will face 11th-ranked Dallas Brown, who has two byes, in the quarterfinals. Abrams also has a first-round bye and will wrestle ninth-ranked Jon Solano of Dickinson State (N.D.) in one of the more intriguing second-round showdowns. Johnson will wrestle unranked Miguel Tovar in the first round and, if he wins, 11th-ranked Brandon Sunday of Indiana Tech in the second round. Fourth-ranked Zach Anderson of Bethany also looms in Johnson’s quarter of the bracket.   By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Mar. 6, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Comment or view comments /* $( document ).ready(function() { // Jquery mobile is trying to style the button and leaving a blank gry button on top of a white button $("#viafouracoms .vf-comment-controls li.vf-right").html(' Submit '); });*/ » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Football Outlook for Bills Stars Mar. 6, 2015 at 8:46 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Cardinals Stars Mar. 4, 2015 at 5:27 am Fantasy Football Outlook for 49ers Stars Feb. 27, 2015 at 9:40 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Rams Stars Feb. 24, 2015 at 11:29 pm Fantasy Football Outlook for Browns Stars Feb. 19, 2015 at 6:32 pm 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook for Vikings Stars Feb. 13, 2015 at 6:47 am calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
