It's all in the cards By Bill Choy Ashland Daily Tidings SoulCollage cards, consisting of a deck of cards individually designed by people for personal understanding and self-expression, have caught the eye of a group of local women. Soulcollage cards feature suits including community, which feature people important to the life of the artist. The cards are a unique way to express people's personalities. Submitted photo For more than a year, the group have met to create SoulCollage decks for themselves, said Sharry Teague of Ashland, a certified SoulCollage facilitator in the group, along with Sheila Filan and Geri Esposito. The process was designed by a Santa Cruz psychotherapist and consists of different suits each person makes, using drawings or photos to create the decks of cards. Suits include committee, which shows parts of your own personality; community, which are people or pets you love or admire, living or dead that they know or admire from afar, and council, which are archetypes, or spiritual figures. Teague said the cards are a form of self-expression and help answer life questions by letting "intuition" speak through the cards and working with the images to reveal hidden layers of ones personality and the deep significance of relationships. "When I love something, I automatically want to share it - usually through teaching," she said. "SoulCollage makes art and personal growth fun and accessible. ... Whether you make one card or a whole deck, the experience will be meaningful." Teague said she loves the artistic aspects of it and as a path to self-discovery. "You always turn up something meaningful and beautiful, and you don't have to be an artist to do it," she said. One of her favorite cards to make is the community cards. She said she has made several cards of family members and has given her work to them. "I love putting together my love and care for them in physical form," Teague said. "I don't think there's a better way to show someone you really care about them." Celebrities are also another popular subject, with many in her group making cards of Oprah Winfrey, she said. Teague said she hasn't made a card of someone well known yet, but hopes to eventually do a card of Emily Dickinson. "I just love poetry and she reflected my love of words," she said. A member of the original group, Florence Slomowitz, said it's a powerful experience working on and sharing their cards with one another. "It's been fun, but on another level, we're learning about our own inner process and asking each other questions and getting support from the group," she said. "It's helped on a inner level as well as a social level. ... It's helped me with my growth. As a mature woman, there's a lot to say goodbye to, but there's also things to say hello to a well. I feel very grateful to be part of this group." Teague is hosting two workshops in her home the week before Valentine's Day, teaching people how to make a SoulCollage deck for that special someone. She is also teaching an introduction to SoulCollage class in March. She said she enjoys the chance of teaching others about SoulCollage. "I love to see how these cards inspire others," Teague said. "I enjoy seeing the uniqueness in people and their inspirations, which you'll never get in normal conversations." For more information, call Teague at 488-8016.
