Nagel sets timeline By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland High will be accepting applications for the vacant head varsity football coaching position Monday through April 1 and hopes to start interviewing prospective coaches before the second week of April, former head coach and AHS Athletic Director Jim Nagel said Monday. Nagel announced his resignation following the 2002 season, but stalled the search for his replacement until after Measure 28 went to the voters Jan. 28. The measure, which would have enacted a temporary income tax hike to offset massive budget cuts, failed, instantly making Nagel's job much more difficult. "We've got a few people that we're hoping to apply, but nobody has told me for certain that they're going to," Nagel said. "And I've had conversations with a number of people, but it's kind of like, 'When you guys know if you've got a teaching job, let me know.' "There's a lot of things that come into play," Nagel added. "How secure is this position, are they going from 20 years of experience in a school to ground zero again, and with more cuts, are they going to be out of a job." Nagel expects to know more about what AHS can offer applicants by Monday. Unless the school can throw in a teaching position, however, Nagel said it will be a hard sell because, "unlike a college head job, where all you are is a coach, nobody's going to exist on $4,500 a year. And I don't have anybody currently on staff that have expressed an interest in the position."
