We won't second-guess Allann Bros.' corporate move to close what officials said was a store that had lost significant market share. The way they went about it, however, left a bitter taste. The Beanery's manager was told in a phone call at 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday to sell nothing more and to remove all customers within 30 minutes. An Allann Bros. van pulled up, corporate representatives changed the locks, and that was that. They even took the tip jar. Tips do have to be accounted for, and we trust the corporate representatives were true to their promise that the employees would get checks for the jar's contents. But shutting down a business in the middle of a workday in that fashion seems unnecessarily harsh. Was there some reason why they couldn't have waited at least until closing time? As the Beanery perked along in its understated way, the coffee market was swiftly passing it by. Trendy new shops popped up around town, and for whatever reasons, the Beanery was unable to keep up. A post on the Allan Bros.' website said the company kept the store going out of "sentimental attachment" to Ashland, and "we appreciate the many years the community has shared with us."
