Now the girls can stake a claim to local dominance. In their final meet of the regular season against Crater and South Medford, both the Ashland boys and girls won by comfortable margins at the Southern Oregon University pool. Next is the Southern Oregon Conference district meet, Friday and Saturday at the SOU pool. It's perhaps more impressive the girls won with such a cushion, 80-58, over South Medford, considering how small the Ashland team is compared to the competition. Only 10 swimmers competed for Ashland on Tuesday, and that's with the entire team healthy for the first time this season. No fewer than 16 took to the starting blocks for South Medford. "With the numbers they have and the numbers we have, I thought (South Medford's) depth would get us in the end," said Grizzly head coach Lara Bishop. The battle on the boys' side was for second place. The Grizzlies had enough points to win after the fifth event, less than halfway through. Ashland posted a total of 92 points. Crater notched 42 and South Medford had 36. The girls won the 200-yard medley relay to start the meet, then senior Angie Scarminach won the 200 individual medley. Senior Caitlin Emery won the 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle and senior Hannah Bergstrom and Crater's Kayla Seland tied in the 50 freestyle. Bergstrom and Emery then teamed up with juniors Julia Coke and Ashley Roda to win the 200 free relay. For the boys, senior Geoff Berteau capped off a nearly perfect day. He won the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly after learning he was accepted to Florida State University, where he will play water polo. In the latter race he clocked in at a new personal best time of 1 minute 0.58 seconds. "I coasted in the individual medley so I could get a good time in the fly," he said. "Anticipate a sub-one minute fly at districts." Berteau also helped his teammates win the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay at the end of the meet. Junior Ben Dawson also claimed a personal best in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.25. Freshman phenom Dashiell King was also on those relay teams. In an exciting boys 50 and 100 freestyle, King was edged by Crater's Michael Heckert both times: in the 50 by .12 seconds and in the 100 by a mere .04 seconds: 55.1 to 55.14. "That happened last time too," said King, referring to their most recent meet against Crater and Grants Pass on Jan. 25. Knocking two seconds off his previous personal best, Ashland senior Alex Grimaldi won the 100-yard breast stroke in 1:09.79. Meanwhile, Emery and freshman Micaela Bishop finished first and second in the girls' 100-yard back stroke. With the win in tow, Ashland can now begin preparing for next week's district meet. For Bishop's team, there is always work to be done. Although the Grizzlies are tapering their practices, Ashland's first-year coach said, "we need to work on our flip turns and dives." "It will be neck and neck with Roseburg," for the boys' conference title, Bishop added. Roseburg is a near lock to capture the girls' SOC title.
