After trailing 17-3 at halftime, the Raiders (0-4) pulled even on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the Cougars (3-2) took control with a 15-play, 69-yard, six-minute march down the field culminating with a Rudy Carlton-to-James Keeler touchdown connection with 8:31 left. Southern went three-and-out on two subsequent possessions, and Cougar kick Mike Betancourth sealed the third straight APU win over the Raiders since 2003 with a 35-yard field goal with 3:16 to go. Despite suffering its seventh straight setback, the Raider offense posted season-highs for scoring, rushing (115 yards) and total offense (276), and the defensive unit allowed only 357 yards. “We’ve got to learn how to win,” Raider coach Shay McClure said. “We’ve put ourselves in position to win three straight weeks. We’re a young team, and we’re playing hard, but at some point we need to get over the little mistakes in crucial situations.” SOU was terrific on both sides of the ball in the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback Dan Downey, who finished 21-for-37 for 161 yards, went 9-for-11 for 69 yards and threw touchdown passes to wrap up a pair of 12-play drives. The Raiders pulled within 17-10 midway through the period on a 10-yard Downey strike to junior receiver Gabe Hatchett, and SOU tied the contest five seconds into the final frame on a two-yard screen pass to junior tight end Jared Leeper. Sophomore running back Jacobe Krizman accumulated 32 of his game-high 120 rushing yards (on 20 attempts) on the game-tying march. With the score still knotted at 17, junior linebacker Fili La’ulu picked off Carlton on a 3rd-and-14 pass play at the Raider 32, but a defensive holding call nullified the play, and APU received received an automatic first down. The Cougars scored the game-winning touchdown nine plays later. La’ulu and senior linebacker Chad Harrell each had nine tackles for the SOU defenders, and safety Matt Beam (an interception at the SOU 4 in the second quarter) and lineman Willis Cooley (a third-quarter fumble recovery) forced Azusa turnovers. Hatchett, a transfer from Sacramento City College, had his best day as a Raider with a game-high eight catches for 99 yards. Winners of three straight overall, Azusa never trailed. The teams traded first-quarter field goals, and the Cougs built the 14-point bulge on touchdowns from receiver Alex Peltier (in the first period) and running back Marcus Lampkin (shortly before halftime). Carlton, a sophomore who replaced Azusa starting quarterback Sean Davis on the team’s third possession, finished with a 16-for-24, 158-yard stat line, and Lampkin rolled up 110 yards on 25 carries. Southern Oregon now faces three straight contests against NCAA Division III Northwest Conference opponents starting with next Saturday’s 6 p.m. clash at Willamette University in Salem.
