COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTOR: CITIZENS' CLIMATE LOBBY Taking action here, now on global climate change Local chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby works says it's not to late to temper the impact By Jack Harbaugh For the Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Jack Harbaugh For the Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 5:43 pm By Jack Harbaugh For the Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 5:43 pm » RELATED CONTENT • Are you concerned or doing anything about climate change? » Social News More wildfires. More superstorms. More floods. Rising temperatures. Lack of snow. Severe drought. The number of news stories about dramatic climate change can be overwhelming. How can a small community like Ashland make a difference? Is it already too late? As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” The volunteers of the Ashland chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) wholeheartedly agree, and we are taking action now. In fact, we’re heading into the eye of the storm: facing political gridlock in Washington and powerful fossil fuel lobbies. And, we’d like you to join us. Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-partisan and nonprofit organization. For the past seven years, volunteers from CCL have been working with Congressional leaders in an effort to find meaningful solutions to global warming. With 7,000 volunteers in the U.S., we are rapidly expanding with over 200 chapters. Our strategy is simple: we bring together the best scientific and economic information for effective solutions to climate change, and we build respectful relationships with our members of Congress to open doors to legislative solutions. Our message to members of Congress and every citizen is that the United States can lead the climate fight with a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend. In simple terms, here’s how it would work: businesses that extract fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) would pay a fee reflective of the fuel’s carbon content and future carbon emissions. All of these revenues would then come back to households in the form of a dividend check. Many economists concur that establishing a price on carbon pollution would be an effective market-based incentive for the development and use of renewable energy. A new study indicates this concept will work. In June of this year, Citizens Climate Lobby released a study from Regional Economic Models, Inc. (REMI) that examined the impact of a steadily-rising fee on carbon-based fuels with revenue from that fee returned to households in equal shares. With the fee starting at $10 per ton of carbon dioxide and rising $10 per ton each year, the major findings were: •  In 20 years, Co2 emissions would be reduced 50 percent below 1990 levels. •  Because of the economic stimulus of recycling carbon fee revenue back to households, in 20 years, 2.8 million jobs would be added to the American economy. •  By applying border tariffs, other nations will have strong economic incentive to follow the U.S. lead on pricing carbon. CCL believes focusing on a specific goal increases the odds of making a difference. We educate volunteers to speak and write effectively to their elected officials, the media and their local communities in an effort to inspire members of Congress to be leaders in the fight for a stable climate. There are currently four carbon tax bills under consideration in the House and Senate. We’re not sitting on our hands. On Sunday, Sept. 21, members of CCL’s Southern Oregon chapter will be in New York City to participate in the People’s Climate March, expected to be the largest march in U.S. history. The march will take place two days before the 2014 Climate Summit at the United Nations, where UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited world leaders from government, finance, business and civil society to come together and take action. Coinciding with the New York City march will be marches in Eugene, Bend and Portland, giving Oregonians an opportunity to participate. Yet beyond the big summits and marches, CCL is working daily to build the political will for a livable world. We believe it is not too late and we as individuals can make a difference! If you’d like to find out more about becoming part of CCL, please join a one-hour Informational Conference Call that takes place  at 5 p.m.   every Wednesday.
