David Blackman Phoenix Martin should consider WWJD Regarding Roland Martin’s commentary (Jan. 30), this practicing Christian is puzzled by Mr. Martin’s implication that homosexuals are, by virtue of their very existence, sinners — that is, if they behave like homosexuals. More puzzling, Martin indicates that homosexuality compromises the “... integrity of the teachings of Christ.” I need to point out that the teacher Christ said not one word — negative or positive, about homosexuality. He said much about judgmentalism and a failure to love others. He did not condemn homosexuals, but he strongly condemned Pharisees and hypocrites. Mr. Martin invoked God’s Word, the same Hebrew Bible that portrayed a violent, misogynist, xenophobic God reflected in some of Paul’s writings about slavery and the second-class position of women in society. The murderous behavior of some of God’s chosen people in the Old Testament (look at Sampson’s childish serial killings in Judges) points to the need to read the Bible with a critical, analytical eye and a constant reference to the question: “What would Jesus do?” Such a reading has convinced this Christian that, for me, being homophobic is a sin. It’s not my place to judge Mr. Martin; I just know that I can’t be a Christian and a homophobe at the same time. As I understand it, and my personal relationship to my God — the Holy Spirit is speaking to me. Gerald G. Garland Ashland Buyer beware of Plan D I am a senior who only takes two fairly inexpensive prescription drugs, and so I decided to wait until May to enroll in the least-expensive Plan D drug plan. Much to my surprise and consternation, I received in the mail three letters from AARP thanking me for enrolling in their plan and explaining that they would deduct the $24.93 premium from my Social Security check every month. I never enrolled in their plan or any other plan! It took me three hours and calls to three different AARP and Medicare offices to finally get to some person who agreed to disenroll me (I hope). I am having serious doubts about joining any plan. June Rachles Ashland Inconsiderate drivers should be pilloried Would it be asking too much to have a pillory installed at the Plaza so that all the drivers who infringe on pedestrians trying to legally cross the street, in the crosswalk, could finally get the attention they are seeking? In the past three or four weeks I have had to scramble, jump back, try to leap over a hood, and haven’t had the satisfaction of any of the errant drivers offering so much as an apology or signaling that they screwed up. It’s been scary. The drivers have been young and old, so there is no one category. Perhaps, the police department could add an officer whose sole responsibility is to deal with traffic only, who doesn’t get calls for domestic disputes, etc., just traffic, and the many traffic problems abounding here. I don’t amble across the street. I’m a driver also, and I understand the issues and frustrations which seem to blind people behind the wheel. What they should know is that if I live through getting clipped by any of them while crossing the street, I’ll own their house, I’ll have them working for me for the rest of my life. Thomas Walters Ashland Oscars nominees in the Key of C Since the academy’s choice of best pictures didn’t do it for us, those of us (highly caffeinated regulars) at the Key of C Coffee Shop are having our own nomination process. Nominate your own best picture nominee now (ballot box is in the front corner). Ballots to choose among the most nominated pictures will be available beginning Feb. 22 in honor of Washington’s actual birthday. The winner will be announced March 5 at 8 a.m., several hours in advance academy’s selection. The director of the Key of C best picture winner will be given a coupon worth a free cup of coffee and a bagel (any flavor). Neither this letter nor the contest itself are sponsored by the Key of C, but by the aforementioned highly caffeinated regulars.
