Ashland High senior pitcher Aaron San Nicholas releases the ball during Thursday’s nonconference game against Henley. The Grizzlies scored two runs in the sixth to beat the defending 3A champions, 5-4, at North Mountain Park. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Sam Gaviglio and Wes Dodds each drove home a run in the bottom of the sixth as Ashland rallied to beat defending Class 3A champion Henley 5-4 Thursday under the lights at North Mountain Park. Gaviglio’s double sailed over the center fielder’s head to bring home Robby Bruce from third and Dodds smacked a single up the middle on the very next pitch to give the Grizzlies (2-0) the lead in the nonconference game. “We’re just trying to build on every game and take it one pitch at a time and one game at a time,” Dodds said. “Right now, we’re kind of feeling what we can do and so far everything’s working out.” Gaviglio, who gave up four runs in the sixth, shut the Hornets (1-1) out in the seventh despite a one-out walk to pick up the win. Ashland led most of the way after scoring three runs on two hits and three walks in the first. Max Gordon led off with a single and scored on John Goldberg’s sacrifice fly. Tysin Senestraro scored on a wild pitch and Justin Meza came home on Bruce’s single. The Hornets came all the way back with a sixth-inning rally that was capped by Colin Stock’s two-run double. “(Gaviglio’s) a sophomore and he’s a little jittery, but I think he learned a lot on the hill today,” Ashland head coach Don Senestraro said. Ashland starter Aaron San Nicholas, a senior, struck out seven and held Henley scoreless over the first four innings. He was replaced by Tyler Killeen, who struck out three before being pulled with one out in the sixth. Ashland’s three pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts, but also walked eight. “It’s always good to come out and get a win against a good quality program like Henley,” Senestraro added. “The kids played well and showed a lot of character coming back after falling behind.” Henley 000 004 0 — 4 4 0 Ashland 300 002 x — 5 6 0 Nygren, Maurer (1), Harris (4) and Hoppe; San Nicholas, Killeen (5), S.
