--> --> July 16: ASA squad takes fifth; American legion wrapup Ashland Daily Tidings McMINNVILLE - A trip through the loser's bracket can make for a long tournament - and the Ashland Bandits ASA 14 and under softball team found out just how long this past weekend at the state tournament. Ashland lost in the second round Friday night, then battled its way through four loser's bracket games before falling to the South Medford Blue Aces Sunday and settling for fifth place in the tourney. "The schedule didn't really favor us," head coach Rich Beugli said. "Saturday we got on a roll and outscored teams 15-0. But Sunday everything caught up with us and we were playing with half a tank." Ashland opened the tourney with a bang Friday with a 2-0 victory over the Clackamas Falcons. Megan Beugli led the Bandits with a triple and an RBI, while Sara Joy Burnson added a run-scoring double. Late Friday the Bandits were bumped from the winner's bracket with a 2-1 setback to the Rogue Valley Rebels. "We played a better game than they did," Beugli said. "We outhit them, played better in the field. The thing is we left nine runners on base and that hurt us." Ashland started their trip through the loser's bracket Saturday by knocking off Astoria 8-0. Brittany Durst, Beugli, Amanda Moore, Burnson and Angela Heine each had a pair of hits versus Astoria. The Bandits then bounced back to knock off both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the tournament to advance to Sunday. First was a 2-0 victory over No. 2 seed Forest Grove. Erica Corns came through with a pinch hit RBI single in the seventh. Next up was a 5-0 win over the top-seed McMinnville Grizzlies to cap a perfect Saturday. Eagle Point's Jamie Williams pitched three innings, while Beugli pitched the rest of a scoreless Saturday for the Bandits. That set up Sunday's matchup with the North Medford Black Tornado. Again the red-hot Bandits had no problem, rolling to a 4-1 victory to put them in the fourth-place game with the Blue Aces. But the Blue Aces were rested and held on to defeat the Bandits 4-3 in eight innings. "They had played two less games," Beugli said. "We just fell short." American Legion At Ashland, the Ashland Pilots continued to roll through American Legion `A' league competition with a doubleheader sweep of Medford Saturday afternoon. The Pilots scored a 4-3 victory in the opener, then outlasted the Mavericks 12-9 in the nightcap. Ashland (16-1-1) has now won 16 straight games. Bill Rowe improved to 5-0 on the year after picking up the victory in the first game. Titus Weston came on in relief in the second game to get his first victory. Rowe was also the star at the plate going 6-for-6 with three double and a home run on the day. Ashland travels to Klamath Falls Tuesday for a 6 p.m. doubleheader. Email your...
