The prevailing mindset in this beautiful unique town seems to be to rid it of all its historic and aesthetic qualities, including heritage trees, by planting uniform saplings of one banal variety, to replace the old, majestic, unique ones that have grown up with Ashland and its history. It is difficult to understand why people who are blind and oblivious to the natural world would come to a charming small town surrounded by forest and want to alter everything about it that is natural and unique. The deer are a problem to such people, the large trees are dangerous so chop them down. Bears are large and frightening and knock over garbage cans, so shoot them with stun guns and dump them far away in the woods. If they have the audacity to return, shoot them dead with real guns. As for skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, etc., they are considered vermin and pests and serve no purpose for humans so they are poisoned, trapped, hunted, terrorized and destroyed for no reason at all except they are considered useless. How cruel is that! The same attitude extends to people who are unfortunate enough to be homeless or choose to be so. Banish them since they are in the way and make others who have chosen or are able to be comfortable, uncomfortable. Ashland has certainly changed in the nearly 20 years that I have resided here and not for the better. It is losing its unique character and filling up with people who feel entitled without allowing other beings the freedom to exist. Nicole Twining Ashland The best slave After reading the disturbing Monday, Jan. 11 Daily Tidings article, "Gun Violence: Quilt project's vision: An America with fewer gun deaths," I couldn't help but allude to an online article posted Sunday, Oct. 25. "The Best Slave Is The One Who Thinks They Are Free" brought up socialist/communist agitator Saul Alinsky. Now, I don't doubt the sincerity of the person or persons promoting this so-called "Gun Violence Quilt Project." However, don't wish for what you want, you just might get it: a domestic totalitarian police state with total state control! There is no such thing as gun violence. No firearm in and of itself gets up and shoots innocent people; any firearm requires a perpetrator to pull the trigger. A firearm, any firearm for that matter, has no free moral will. Also, the groups who promote this anti-gun agenda: Do they realize America's gun control laws historically have their roots in racism? To learn more simply access JPFO Inc. at www.jpfo.org and read their online video: "No Guns For Negroes." With Martin Luther King's holiday approaching this needs to be brought to public scrutiny. For way too long our socialist public schools, colleges, universities, and academia have deliberately censored and concealed this from the American public. Also another worthy online video is "Agenda: Grinding America Down" by Curtis Bowers. Space doesn't permit me to write what I actually want here. Consider too "There Is No Such Thing As Gun Violence" by Jason Lenker, Oct. 28, 2015, and "Constitutional Education, Not Revolution, Is The Solution" by JBS CEO Art Thompson posted at www.jbs.org for Jan. 4-10, 2016. Farmer Ashland Join the quilt project Thank you for the excellent article on the Vision Quilt, which is bringing people together through creative expression to expand the conversation on gun violence. As Cathy DeForest, founder of the Vision Quilt project, says, change is possible when we envision alternatives and work toward those goals. Although the word quilt is used for the project (it is modeled on the AIDS Memorial Quilt/The NAMES Project), no sewing skills are necessary, as panels are created on 18" X 24" pieces of canvas. While some contributors have chosen to use fabric and quilting methods, many have used paints, markers and other materials. If you'd like to participate in this project, plan to attend the next workshop at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18 at Sew Creative, 115 E. Main St., Ashland. All materials will be provided at no cost.
