One stamp went missing the first week Quiznos opened. The second vanished a month later, and whoever took the stamps may have also snagged a few blank cards to fill in. Even though the situation doesn't sound that dire, the disappearance of the two stamps Quiznos cashiers use to mark customer purchases on cards has had quite the backlash at the two-month old Ashland restaurant. "It's too bad that someone would ruin it for everyone," said Quiznos co-owner Donna Freeman. "We started getting not a lot, but a few cards stamped up in a suspicious manner." The restaurant will no longer fill in the cards for customers, though people may receive a 50-cent credit per stamp through Nov. 23, and have permanently discontinued the stamps-for-free-sandwiches promotion. Quiznos' owners discontinued their stamping practices in late September and estimate the culprit only enjoyed a few free sandwiches. The owners didn't consider the theft serious enough to warrant a police report. "For a stamp, it's kind of hard," restaurant co-owner Hugh Freeman said. The Freemans introduced the stamping incentive the Medford Quiznos had ended the promotion years ago after a similar problem. "We did this knowing the issue had happened in Medford," Donna Freeman said. "I'm kind of a Pollyanna and thought it wouldn't happen to us, and it did." Although patrons may be frustrated by the policy change, the Freemans feel confident they have taken steps that will continue to reward customers - without leaving the business vulnerable to enterprising thieves. Following the disappearance of the second stamp, the Quiznos owners opted to donate a portion of sales to Southern Oregon University students back to the SOU scholarship fund, rather than let customers earn free sandwiches. Also, Quiznos now offers a 10 percent discount to patrons over the age of 55 from 2 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
