The resolution, sponsored by Non-traditional Senator Steve Ryan, states discriminatory recruiting practices in the Stevenson Union would be barred from the building because “all branches of the U.S. armed forces discriminate on the basis of gender identity and preference ...” All military recruiters and recruiting materials would be eliminated from the SU. Currently, military recruiters visit campus once a month, where they pay a fee to rent table space in the SU. “It’s not banning them from campus,” said SOU student Keith Quick. “They still have an ROTC building. We’re not tearing that down.” If passed, the resolution would take effect June 13 and stand until revoked or suspended, the document says. The U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals recently reversed the Soloman Act, which suspends federal funding to colleges and universities that prohibit military recruiting on campus if military practices violate the anti-discrimination policies of the school. Harvard Law School, the University of California-Berkley, the City College of New York and others have since barred recruiters from their campuses. The SOU student senate meets at 6 p.m. in the senate chambers on the third floor of the SU. The meeting is open to the public.
