Equipped with freshly printed bachelor's degrees — required for most registered nurse positions these days — they are instantly in demand for positions averaging $32 an hour. In fact, 95 percent of this year's Ashland graduating class already have jobs lined up. For the rapidly growing health care industry, these grads are essential. The need for trained nurses is increasing for three reasons: First, the nation's population is aging rapidly.  There were 39.6 million Americans 65 and over in 2009. By 2030, there will be 72.1 million, according to federal statistics — 19 percent of the population. Second, the average age of working nurses has steadily crept up as well, and now stands at 54 in Oregon. When the recession hit, nurses across the country delayed retirement for financial reasons, and now that the economy is turning around, more are expected to leave the work force, freeing up space for new hires. Finally, health care reform has brought millions more Americans into the health care system by providing health insurance they didn't have before. More patients means the need for more nurses. Because of the two reasons above, the demand is likely to be there even if the Supreme Court throws a wrench into the Affordable Care Act this month. All of that means the OHSU Ashland class of 2015 will need to hit the ground running.
