That means the homeless dogs and cats of the area are in luck. For the past three years, Miller has asked that her friends and family, in lieu of giving her birthday presents, give presents to the stray animals being held at the Jackson County Animals Shelter in Phoenix. “She loves animals,” said her father, Alan Miller. He and his wife, Mary Russell-Miller, adopted Aimee from China when she was nine months old. Besides her affection for animals, that she was once without a family, too, is the only explanation he can come up with as to why his daughter would be willing to forgo her birthday presents, a rite of passage for most youngsters. “She’s given hundreds of dollars worth of things over the years,” Alan Miller said. Colleen Macuk, the program manager for the animal shelter, said Aimee is one of several children to make this sacrifice for the animals. “It’s absolutely amazing when our young people give up something they would be gaining to help our animals,” she said. “Beyond the donations, it brings public awareness by letting their friends know they can make a difference.” Aimee Miller turned 10 on Tuesday.
