I urge clear thinkers of both parties to support: o Alan Bates in the State Senate, not only for his proven ability to lead and work with both parties but also because with his election the Democrats are likely to take control of the Senate and could start moving things in a more positive direction. o Peter Buckley for State Representative because he will bring much needed vision and a spirit of cooperation to Salem. o Sue Densmore for County Commissioner because she will break the decidedly pro-growth stance of the Commission and take positions that will benefit the entire county, not just a self-serving few. These elections couldn't be more important for the future of our area and for Oregon. It�s time to think beyond party lines and elect these three outstanding candidates. Jack Hardesty Ashland Hartzell's earned the vote Cate Hartzell deserves to be re-elected. She is not against public art as her detractors imply. Councilor Hartzell made a motion for city staff to allocate the sum of $5,900 from the general fund to the public arts commission and suggested that said arts commission should present to staff and council a method for long-term funding. Her motion did not receive a second. Councilor Hartzell is not against affordable housing. She is for the best possible way to create housing that will benefit the city and all the citizens of Ashland, not the downtown projects that may benefit the few. Cate was instrumental in convincing the council to vote against the oppressive "Patriot Act" thereby protecting our civil rights. It is my observation that Cate does the research, analyzes the data, crunches the numbers, scrutinizes the details and takes the time to measure twice. Cate Hartzell deserves to be re-elected because she has the courage of her convictions to make the necessary no vote when it is needed. Liz Jones Ashland Personally, Morris is better Like most of you, I do not know Michael Morris or Cate Hartzell. I have watched the council meetings both in person and on television. I have watched the incumbent, Cate Hartzell, operate. I have also attended planning commission meetings and watched the challenger, Michael Morris, operate. It is very clear that Michael Morris listens to all sides of an issue before making up his mind on how to vote. He truly listens to the people and the city's professional planners. It is equally clear the incumbent seldom appears to listen or really care about what the public has to say. From what I've seen, Michael Morris would be a breath of fresh air for our city. Steve Shapiro Ashland Hartzell's 'voice' is clear by action In his campaign for Cate Hartzell's seat on the City Council, local contractor Mike Morris defines himself as "The voice to provide direction and define the future of Ashland." In actuality, his voice is subdued, if not entirely mute, concerning the topics he lists. When asked at a recent forum, "What community experience, other than his role on the planning commission and Hillside Ordinance Ad Hoc Committee, qualifies him for a city council position," Morris confirmed the limits of his experience by shifting the subject to his engineering position in Seattle. Also noteworthy is that during the controversy over Bemis' gigantic downtown development, the planning commission minutes of last October and November devote only three lines to input and comments by Morris. By contrast, those minutes record 53 lines by fellow contractor and commissioner John Fields, a man who apparently exercises independent, critical thinking. Moreover, Mike ventured to say even less on other divisive subjects like the DeBoer mansion and the Big Box Ordinance. What kept this candidate from providing the leadership that he promises now during his seven years on the planning commission? Given that he seems reticent to share his thinking in public discussions, we must consider whether his proposed "voice" is rhetoric paying lip service to progressive causes, knowing full well that he already has the backing and endorsement of Ashland's political conservatives. Incumbent Cate Hartzell didn't have to promise a voice four years ago when she ran for office. Even then, her record spoke for itself. Darwin Thusius Ashland Buckley has the vision to lead Peter Buckley has the vision, intelligence and wisdom to represent our district well in Salem. As the mother of children who rely on Oregon's educational system, I have complete faith in Peter's ability to help set the priorities straight in Salem. Peter's vision of an Oregon that provides an excellent education for its children, health care for all of its citizens, and an economy that provides good jobs that can support families mirrors my own vision for the future. We need to send representatives to Salem who are ready to solve the problems our state faces - people who can work with other legislators to create actual solutions. I am proud to cast my vote for Peter Buckley. Nicole Graham Ashland Be part of pet solutions As part of my work at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, I take photographs of the adoptable cats and dogs for newspaper advertisements. So far this year I have had the opportunity to photograph more than 6,000 homeless cats and dogs, and the year isn't finished yet. I am writing this public appeal in the hope that you can help me put down my camera and never have to take another close-up of a scared, confused, or desperate homeless pet. Each time I focus my lens deep into those eyes, I am also looking forward to the day when I am called into my boss's office and told that there are not enough stray and abandoned animals to warrant my employment. Your party has betrayed you, and all the rest of us. Our Republican legislature has put this state into the dirt, in order to make a few rich people even richer. The result is that everything public is hurting. The public schools, colleges, and universities are hurting. The state police and city police are hurting. Firemen are hurting. Hospitals are hurting, health services are hurting. We have had good Republican leaders in the past, but not this time. We have to make a change, and get back to seeing our state run properly. What is true here right now is true nationally as well. We must dump these people who are hurting us all. So please join us, and help straighten out the mess we are in.
