--> --> SOU soccer routs Eastern By Sarah Petersen Ashland Daily Tidings It was a scoring frenzy for the Southern Oregon University women's soccer team Friday. The Raiders rolled to an 8-0 shutout of Eastern Oregon to improve to 3-2 in Cascade Conference play. "Today's game was a warm-up game, that's the mentality we had," head coach Jose Chavez said. "Tomorrow we play Albertson and they will be tough. We are starting to see our potential and we are meshing together nicely. We will try and score as many goals tomorrow as we did today." The Raiders, in their second season of intercollegiate play, took a record-breaking 22 shots on goal and also broke the record for most shots taken in a game (35). Senior forward Ali Richards spearheaded the onslaught by becoming only the second SOU player to record a hat-trick. The Raiders needed no time to warm up. Within the first five minutes of play freshman midfielder Jeannelle Thompson passed through the Eastern defense to a wide-open Richards who fired a shot to put the Raiders up 1-0. At the 14-minute mark, a scramble in the Mountaineer goal box resulted in a goal by sophomore midfielder Kristy Ayers who gently knocked the ball into the net for SOU's second goal. The Raiders weren't finished yet. With 23 minutes of action complete, senior midfielder Monica Doshier's free kick found Thompson who pushed the ball into the back of the net to make the score 3-0. Six minutes later, Ayers rocketed a shot from 15 yards out, but Richards intercepted the errant shot and tapped it in for her second goal of the game and a 4-0 lead. The onslaught continued in the second half. Richards kicked off the final period by scoring her third and final goal to put SOU up 5-0. Sophomore midfielder Laura Ball, freshman forward Desirae Tarr and freshman midfielder Amber Velasco all scored in the second half to make the final score of the game 8-0. "I am really excited with how our team played today," Richards said. "At times I was a little concerned because the other team would try and make run. But I trust our defense to re-distribute the ball." The Raiders return to action at moon today at North Mountain Park against Albertson College. Email your...
