OUR VIEW Our View: Restoration remorse over Ashland's Plaza Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Critics of the remodeled Plaza have taken matters into their own hands, forming the Ashland Plaza Restoration Project and launching a fundraising drive aimed at replacing all of the new gray pavers with new pavers of another color. While their persistence and commitment is admirable, raising $35,000 privately to undo what was done through a public process is the wrong approach, and there is no guarantee that city officials would accept the money even if they succeed in raising it. On one level, it's inspiring to see local residents who care so deeply about their town that they get personally involved in the design details of public works projects. It's understandably disconcerting to see the Plaza without the canopy of large trees that had grown up to shade it over the years, and the new Plaza does have a more austere appearance than the old — for now. But new trees will grow to maturity over time, providing shade, and the Downtown Beautification Committee has recommended new planters to increase greenery and partial replacement of some pavers to break up the gray expanse. That isn't enough for the organizers of the Restoration Project, but it ought to be enough to satisfy most residents. Meanwhile, if the new group wants to raise $35,000, we can think of ways to spend it that would do more to beautify downtown than replacing pavers. Contributing to a homeless shelter to address the problem of loitering transients would be a good start.
