Only seven days after their ugly season-opening loss to Rex Putnam, the Ashland High football team unveiled its full arsenal in a 48-13 nonconference win over Cleveland, Friday night at Phillips Field. Sam Littleton threw three touchdown passes, Steve Jorgensen caught the first two and Aaron San Nicholas had two spectacular touchdown returns - one after a kickoff and one after an interception - as Ashland improved to 1-1 heading into next week's Southern Oregon Conference opener versus high flying North Medford. There were plenty of good signs for the Grizzlies. o Ashland's offense, stuffed for the most part at Rex Putnam, produced 300 yards, most of which came in the first three quarters, when the starters were still playing. o Ashland's run defense held the visiting Warriors to just 87 yards on 35 attempts, an average of just 2.42 yards per rush. o Littleton bounced back from last week's three-interception game by completing 8 of 13 passes for 183 yards. The Grizzlies scored the first 28 points and were never threatened. Littleton hit Jorgensen on a post from 20 yards out for the game's first score with 8:22 to go in the first quarter. Littleton and Jorgensen hooked up again on the last play of the quarter - a fly pattern down the right sideline that produced a 43-yard TD. In the second quarter, San Nicholas intercepted Scott Hollowell's bomb and returned it 42 yards. Littleton's 18-yard bullet to Jeff Skinner with 4:12 left in the half capped Ashland's early barrage. It continued in the third quarter, when Aaron San Nicholas returned the opening kickoff 95 yards. Less than two minutes later, Jason Coburn plunged into the end zone from two yards out to make it 40-6. Coburn, who had a great day with eight rushes for 90 yards, added a 55-yard TD sprint later in the third to cap the scoring. Skinner led Ashland in the receiving department with four receptions for 68 yards, while Jorgensen caught three passes for 84 yards. Morgan Mason and Simon Weibel each tallied eight tackles to spearhead another impressive Grizzly defensive effort.
