I think the sign located across from the new fire station that reads "Welcome Ashland Oregon" is stupid. It shows that we Ashlanders have no sense of grammar and we are a bit crazy for putting this poorly written sign in the middle of downtown Ashland. My suggestion is that the sign should be changed to "Welcome to Downtown Ashland" and if that's too hard, then perhaps "Welcome to Ashland, Oregon." I mean, why do you think people have already unofficially added the word "to" to the sign? It is just dumb to leave it the way it is. Tori Lipski Ashland Giving pets is like giving away someone's kids I read your article today about Jackson County Animal Shelter offering holiday gift certificates for people to get shelter animals. I congratulate the shelter on no longer adopting out animals as gifts. Any humane society will tell you that's a recipe for animal abandonment or neglect. But it worries me that the shelter offers gift certificates for people to adopt animals. Can you imagine giving your friend a gift certificate to go adopt a child? Dogs and cats can be dependent family members for 18 years, as long as a child. Like adopting a child, adopting an animal should be something that the adopter chooses, not something they feel obligated to do because someone has given them a certificate. I fear for all the animals adopted by people who don't really want an animal but who feel they should honor the gifter by using the certificate. How many of these animals will be returned, abandoned or neglected because their guardians never really wanted them in the first place? Many people who don't want an animal will have a hard time saying no to a gift. Why not encourage people to give a gift to animal lovers by donating to the animal shelter in the gift recipient's name? Gift recipients could have their names inscribed in a plaque on the shelter wall, perhaps, or have a banquet held in their honor.
