Wire Reports Southern Oregon University volleyball coach Paul Elliott has been named the 2004 NAIA Region I Coach of the Year. The 14th-year Raider coach engineered one of the school's greatest seasons, which ended last Friday an eyelash shy of a first-ever national tournament quarterfinal berth. Elliott, who is a five-time Cascade Conference and a three-time regional coach-of-the-year honoree, guided SOU to a 28-8 overall record that included a successful defense of league regular-season and tournament titles as well as a fourth straight regional tournament championship. The Raiders, who ranked as high as No. 10 in the NAIA rankings and finished the year No. 21, defeated two different second-ranked squads (Biola, Calif. and Lee, Tenn.) as well as regional top seed and 13th-ranked Carroll, Mont. Southern ended the year with a 19-match home win streak and a 16 match skein in regional tourney action, and it posted the school's eighth consecutive 20-win season. Elliott, who has a 337-151 career mark at the Raider helm, is only 22 wins shy of surpassing the legendary Joanne Widness as the school's winningest volleyball coach.
