--> --> Suzuki ties rookie mark in 6-3 victory SEATTLE (AP) - Even having their regular shortstop diagnosed with tuberculosis didn't stop the Seattle Mariners' momentum. Ichiro Suzuki had infield singles in his first two at-bats to tie Shoeless Joe Jackson's rookie hits record as the Seattle Mariners ended the Oakland Athletics' seven-game winning streak, 5-3 on Friday night. With the two singles, Suzuki matched the record of 233 that Jackson set in 1911. Suzuki, 27, signed with the Mariners as a free agent in November after winning seven batting titles in Japan. The Mariners announced during the game Carlos Guillen has pulmonary tuberculosis and will be out for at least one week. Rookie Ramon Vazquez, who spent most of the season at Triple-A Tacoma, started in Guillen's place. Because pulmonary tuberculosis is contagious, all the Mariners' players will be tested for it, said Dr. Mitch Storey, the team doctor. Like a common cold, it spreads through the air. Only people who are sick with pulmonary tuberculosis of the lungs are infectious, Storey said. "The likelihood is he probably contracted the bacteria a long time ago, maybe a year ago," Storey said. The Mariners test for the disease in spring training, but their test of Guillen didn't show up anything then, Storey said. "Did he have it then and the test was not sensitive enough to pick it up?" Storey asked. "We will never know that." The Mariners (110-44) won their fourth game in a row after being swept in a three-game series in Oakland last weekend. The AL West champs improved to 9-8 against Oakland this season. The A's will be the AL wild card team in the playoffs. Afterward, it was hard for the Mariners to enjoy their 110th victory that tied them with the 1927 New York Yankees and the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates. Only the 1906 Chicago Cubs (116 wins), the 1998 Yankees (114) and the 1954 Cleveland Indians (111) have more victories than the Mariners, who have eight games left. "We feel terrible for Carlos obviously," manager Lou Piniella said. "The important thing is he's being taken care of. We're all thinking about the young man. He's been an intricate part of the team." Guillen, who has committed only 10 errors as Alex Rodriguez's replacement at shortstop this season, won't be able to be around his teammates for a week. Because of the disease, he will be in quarantine. "He just won't be around here," Piniella said. The A's were sympathetic about Guillen's plight. "Are you kidding me?" Oakland manager Art Howe said. "I hope that's all he's got. That can be pretty serious." Jason Isringhausen, the A's closer, was diagnosed with tuberculosis in May 1997 when he was with the New York Mets. "I woke up one morning and I couldn't breath," Isringhausen said. "I had a growth on my lung and they thought it was cancer. I got tested for everything. I had tubes up my nose. It was scary." Freddy Garcia (18-6), Guillen's countryman from Venezuela, allowed three runs and six hits in six innings to beat Mark Mulder (20-8), who had won five in a row. Mulder beat Garcia 7-4 Sunday. The Mariners took a 2-0 lead in the first on John Olerud's RBI groundout and an error on first baseman Jason Giambi that allowed Stan Javier to score. They made it 5-0 in the third on Bret Boone's run-scoring single for his 136th RBI of the season and a two-run double by Ed Sprague. The A's scored their three runs in the sixth on Giambi's RBI double and run-scoring singles by Jermaine Dye and Terrence Long. Mulder lost for the second time in 14 decisions. He gave up five runs - four earned - and nine hits in six innings. "We took all three at home and I'm sure they want to send a message back," Mulder said. "It wasn't the best way to start a series, but we have two games left with them. Hopefully, we get better." Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth inning for Seattle for his 43rd save in 49 opportunities.
