"Woman in Gold" memorializes both the Holocaust and the 70th anniversary ending World War II (1939-1945). Remember this is the 100th anniversary of the 1915-1917 Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) during World War I (1914-1918), precursor to the Nazi Holocaust, 20th century Bolshevik and Communist atrocities, and Japanese war crimes until 1945. Take Kolyma in Northeastern Siberia within the Soviet Arctic Circle, the worst of Stalin's Gulags. The murderous Soviet NKVD headed by Lavrenti Beria, Stalin's chief executioner and ruthless police boss, paralleled Nazi Germany's dreaded SS and Gestapo. Google "Kolyma: Land of White Death." NKVD guards with .30 caliber (7.62mm) Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifles and sub-machine guns corralled, herded, brutalized, enslaved and murdered enemies of the Communist regime. Twice as many victims perished at Kolyma than died at Auschwitz, Poland. First, they put it in jail by putting up chain-link fence. And now they want to execute it, at 252 years old, to make room for "low-income housing". What a joke. There is no such thing in Ashland as affordable housing. Regular housing a few miles up the road in Talent is far less than so called affordable housing in Ashland. The ball is in your court, council; so please, do the right thing. John Allen Ashland Thanks for kindness Live Oak High School’s annual trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival always includes dinner at Omar’s Steakhouse. The food is outstanding, the service exceptional and the atmosphere inviting. On our last trip, one of the 48 students unknowingly left his ticket to "Guys and Dolls" at the restaurant. We were startled to find James from Omar’s wandering the downtown streets during the Saturday night dinner rush. He had left his post at the restaurant to find our party and to return the lost ticket. We were all stunned by this above-and-beyond act of kindness. The student saw, and loved, the play.
